More than I expected. Description said that it was a "like new", but I received a brand new book. The latest version of the text book was requested in class, but this was almost the exact same as 2011 edition. Works just fine for me.

Reflecting the authors' view that students should be exposed to physics as an applied science, the purpose of this book is two-fold: (1) to demonstrate to students of introductory physics the importance of elementary physical concepts in explaining biomedical phenomena and (2) to provide the physics instructors with a resource of biomedical examples, solved problems, and unsolved exercises.

Designed as a supplement to any two-semester introductory physics textbook, its examples range from the structure of DNA to the effects of biological radiation on the human body. Related topics include such high-interest topics as energy requirements during strenuous exercise or the hydrodynamics of the blood circulation in the body.

A good idea, but overly equation-oriented

This book represents a noble attempt to put together biological and medical applications for introductory physics courses. This is not just a good idea but really a necessity now that many students in these classes are pre-medical (at least in the US). Certainly it represents an excellent source of problem material for those who want to create an intro physics course that has relevance to future doctors and biologists.

Unfortunately, most of the examples are "set-ups" in which a biological system is used as a wrapper for an equation the students are expected to have memorized. For example, when discussing gravity, the book has a problem on a diving hawk (hawks dive by essentially going into free-fall), in which the students are expected to use (1/2) a t-squared, but for which the students are not expected to estimate the effects of air resistance or assess the realism of the physical situation. I.e., the book contains standard plug-and-chug physics problems in biomedical clothing.

It would be nice to see a book that helps students to learn, on their own, how to identify the relevant physics in a biomedical situation. I can't fault this book overly, since there are essentially no examples of what I am looking for, in either the physics or the bio textbook worlds, save for Steven Vogel's outstanding Biomechanics book (highly recommended).

Well structured book

This book has a good content structure for anyone who want to study biomedical applications of physics. For biophysics and first year medical students, this book used in conjunction with a standard calculus or algebra physics book, will be a big help on a better understanding and application of Physics.

About the Author
Donald B. Bibeault has turned around severely troubled companies for more than twenty-five years. He has served as Chairman, CEO, or Chief Operation Officer of numerous corporations including Pacific States Steel, PLM International, Best Pipe and Steel, Inc., Ironstone Group, Inc., American National Petroleum, Inc., Tyler-Dawson Supply and Iron Oak Supply Corporation. He has also served as special advisor to the CEO of Varity Corporations (formerly Massey-Ferguson Ltd.) and as a workout advisor to Bank to America. He is a member of the Board of Overseers of Columbia Business School, a Trustee of Golden Gate University and a member of the University of Rhode Island Business Advisory Board. Dr. Bibeault holds an MBA from Columbia University and a Ph.D. from Golden Gate University.

Right on Target

I just reordered two more copies of Corporate Turnaround by Donald Bibeault.
I am an investment banker who, on occasion, has a client that gets into financial trouble. I find the book very helpful in both organizing a turnaround plan for the client as well as in coaching the client in taking corrective action.
When I first read Dr. Bibeault's book, I immediately recognized that this author knew exactly what happens to a troubled company and has mastered the tools of recovery from practical experience and not from some academic research. Bibeault's turnaround steps are simple and realistic and therefore can be applied in a variety of circumstances.
Each time that I encounter a turnaround situation, I offer my client a copy of Corporate Turnaround with relevant passages highlighted. As a first step, I always turn to Chapter 19 - "The Emergency Stage", and put emphasis on the section that covers Cash Flow Analysis and Control. Building a chart similar to the one showing a cash flow plan is an especially useful way to get started in the right direction.
I am delighted to see that this book is back in print because it's the best in its field. And in my case, its teachings have helped to save a number of companies from almost certain bankruptcy.
