Space Is The Place: The Lives And Times Of Sun Ra, by John F. Szwed

Sun Ra, a.k.a. Herman Poole "Sonny" Blount (1914–1993), has been hailed as "one of the great big-band leaders, pianists, and surrealists of jazz" (New York Times) and as "the missing link between Duke Ellington and Public Enemy" (Rolling Stone). Composer, keyboardist, bandleader, philosopher, poet, and self-proclaimed extraterrestrial from Saturn, Sun Ra led his "Intergalactic Arkestra" of thirty-plus musicians in a career that ranged from boogie-woogie and swing to be-bop, free jazz, fusion, and New Age music. This definitive biography reveals the life, philosophy, and musical growth of one of the twentieth century's greatest avant-garde musicians.

Amazon.com Review
Born Herman Poole Blount in Alabama in 1914, he reinvented himself in the 1950s as Sun Ra, the great surrealist of jazz whose free-form performances with his Arkestra amply justified the description "'jspace music." His mystical beliefs were equally avant-garde; Yale professor John Szwed sympathetically explains some fairly far-out notions as "driven by a hunger for totality that only music could express." Szwed recovers the biographical facts Sun Ra was often at pains to obscure, without losing sight of the overriding role imagination played in this visionary life.

Review
... Szwed has produced a rare jazz biography--one that takes full account of the history that shaped the music and its central personalities. An anthropologist, historian and musicologist who teaches at Yale, Szwed brings an impressive array of skills to this job. He needs them all to track down a subject whose every word seems intended to protect him from scrutiny. -- The New York Times Book Review, Brent Staples

One of America's most prolific and daring musicians, Sun Ra located himself in outer space, beyond both the geographical limits of the United States and the ideological limits of Jim Crow and the Cold War. Such views, spliced with a homegrown Egyptology, earned Sun Ra a reputation as an Afro-eccentric charlatan-genius in the tradition of Marcus Garvey and Elijah Muhammad, and kept his"Arkestra" below the radar of concert halls and record companies. This biography charts Sun Ra's career, showing how he defied critics' periodization schemes, pioneering free jazz and electronic music in the 1940s and reviving big bands in the 1970s. Szwed presents Sun Ra's neoplatonic philosophizing as serious scholarship, however, rather than the charismatic myth-making and -unmaking that it clearly was. The book's treatment of his music--a joyful noise authorized by biblical prophecy, rooted in his native Birmingham's African-American fraternal, club, and society dance orchestras of the 1930s, and branching out into the heavenly spheres--suffers by comparison. Perhaps this late romantic jazz totalist, who shunned sex and drugs, rejected modern notions of race and nation, and took his merry band of"tone scientists" on shoestring-and-bootstrap world tours, will never be brought down to earth.

From the Inside Flap
Always riveting, Space Is the Place is the definitive biography of "one of the great big-band leaders, pianists, and surrealists of jazz"(New York Times)--unparalleled for his purposeful outlandishness, a man who exerted a powerful influence over a vast array of artists.

Sun Ra--a/k/a Herman Poole "SonnyBlount--was born in Alabama on May 22, 1914. But like Father Divine and Elijah Muhammad, he made a lifelong effort to obscure many of the facts of his early life. After years as a rehearsal pianist for nightclub revues and in blues and swing bands, including Wynonie Harris's and Fletcher Henderson's, Sun Ra set out in the 1950s to find a way to impart his views about the galaxy, black people, and spiritual matters through the various incarnations of the Intergalactic Arkestra. His repertoire ranging from boogie-woogie, swing, and bebop to free form, fusion, and whatever, Sun Ra was above all a paragon of contradictions: profundity and vaudeville; technical pianistic virtuosity and irony; assiduous attention to arrangements and encouragement of collective improvisation; respect for tradition and celebration of the fresh.

Some might have been bemused by his Afro-Platonic neo-hermeticism; others might have laughed at his egregious excesses. But Sun Ra was at once one of the great avant-gardists of the latter half of the twentieth century and a black cultural nationalist who extended Afrocentrism from ancient Egypt to the heavens.

Must Reading for Sun Ra Fans
By Patrick O. Moore
First let me say that I am a bigtime Sun Ra fan. If someone did not like Sun Ra's music, this book would probably not be as much fun, but it still might be interesting - say, a three-star rating instead of a five.
Ra has made much of his swing era big band background, having arranged for and performed with Fletcher Henderson ca. 1947, during that band leader's years of decline. This book documents something much less obvious: Ra's indebtedness to doo wop, R&B and even mood music. Who would have guessed the resemblance to Les Baxter? I now hear both Ra and Baxter with new ears. Starting in the first chapter, the book provides important background available nowhere else, such as detailed description of the 1930s Birmingham social clubs, a little known musical scene.
About two thirds of the way through, the narration freezes and the book gets bogged down in describing Ra as a philosopher and poet. This is rather thin soup. Szwed tosses out twenty-dollar terms like "gnosticism" without giving any clear evidence that he, or Ra for that matter, really understands them. Fact is that Ra's genius was largely intuitive, and his uses of Egyptian history and futuristic technophilia were largely metaphorical posturing. Ra's philosophy and poetry are valuable only because he was a musical genius. Students of the music should remember that the programmatic content was used ritually in performance but in no way validates his music or makes it better.
The chapters covering the 1930s through 1960s are fairly detailed. In contrast, the narration about Ra's last 15 years (1977-92) is curtailed (perhaps by a deadline), and we get barely one page per year of activity. A complement to Szwed's book is Robert Campbell's discography, The Earthly Recordings of Sun Ra (Cadence Books), which gives very few pages to the early years but becomes thick by listing recordings made in the 1980s, when technology had made live recordings commonplace.
...I am about to read John Szwed's book for the fifth time. After reading it the second time, I was so sorry to finish I had to start over again. That's why I wish there were more about his late recording and touring career.
If you don't know Sun Ra's music, start with the Evidence CDs and get with it. If you already know and like Ra's music, then you will enjoy this book.

The Definitive Biography of "Mr. Mystery"
By A Customer
John Szwed's "Space is the Place" is a monumental achievement. Sun Ra is arguably the most difficult figure on whom a person could possibly write a biography, since throughout his life he denied that he was even from Earth. This makes Szwed's careful analysis of his formative years in Alabama, replete with factual details, all the more compelling and welcome. What soon becomes apparent is that Sun Ra was often a misunderstood musician and composer who was one of the few artists in jazz history that encompassed every generic possibility of jazz in his art. In Ra's music, you heard everything from swing, be-bop, hard-bop, free-jazz, and even traces and significations of more popular musical forms (i.e., doo-wop, blues, and even disco in the late-70s). And he not only drew from these genres, but in many ways helped to shape them, by forming new and revising old musical trends. One can only hope that the world will eventually be graced with biographies of Albert Ayler and Cecil Taylor that are as carefully researched as Szwed's study of Sun Ra.
Szwed's book also delves deeply into the space-influenced philosophy of Sun Ra and its emphasis on "discipline" and "precision." While Szwed features direct quotes when possible, he also paraphrases the philosophy of Sun Ra frequently. His analysis could have gone much farther into Ra's critique of Christianity and his use of language. At one point, he mentions that both Ra and Nietzsche "unflinchingly assaulted received Christianity" (p.383), but he does not extend his analysis further. (It would have been interesting to compare how both artists used the theme of "overcoming" in their art, or perhaps a discussion of the similarities in their critiques of democracy.) Szwed also could have drawn a stronger connection between Ra and the European Romantics that he occasionally mentions, including William Blake. Both figures were visionaries who tried to break their "mind forged manacles" and reach a higher state of innocence by using aesthetics as a catalyst to reach transcendental experiences.
It also would have been useful to analyze more thoroughly Sun Ra's use of binary oppositions in his speeches and in his interrogation of concepts such as "Truth," "Righteousness," and "Death." Despite Sun Ra's truly amazing ability to parse the English language in his lectures, often major logical fallacies emerged in his approach to such matters (although Sun Ra, at some point, probably deconstructed the term "Logic" as well). It would have been nice for Szwed to at least acknowledge the limitations of Sun Ra's thought along with discussing its strengths. However, Szwed's book is the best study of one of the most important thinkers and artists of the "omniverse age" and should be required reading for anyone interested in jazz music.

Fine Explanation of a Complex Phenomenon
By Scott McFarland
The book is well-written and does what it sets out to do - explain who Sun Ra was and what he was doing. This is no mean feat. Sun Ra was a man of many interests and beliefs, of whom many misconceptions exist. Even most of his fans (I've been listening to Ra's music for about 10 years now) will probably learn much and gain tremendous perspective on him from this book (I certainly did).
The book's story is one of a man with artistic genius within him, who probably could have been a millionaire and musical "star" - who chose to do other things instead. Here is the unusual story of what he did and why he did it.
There is room for another book in the world on Ra's discography, that traces the patterns, forms, and themes of his vast catalogue of recorded music. There is room in the world for a book that tells the stories of the members of Ra's Arkestra. But this is not those books, this is the first logical step in studies : an explanation of Sun Ra himself. It's a difficult job very well done.

Othonos and Kalli v. Kashyap
By G. Wild
A review of this book can really only be given in comparison to the only other book on the subject at this time, "Fiber Bragg Gratings," by Kashyap.

The book has a wonderful balance between the theory and applications of Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), something that is lacking in Kashyap's book. The first 4 chapters (not including the introduction) give a nicely detailed theory for FBGs, including several sections in the "Properties of Fiber Bragg Gratings" (chapter 3) that are not covered in Kashyap's treatment. The book then contains two relatively large chapters on the applications of FBGs, the first on "Applications of Bragg Gratings in Communications" (chapter 6), and "Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors" (chapter 7). FBG sensors are completely omitted by Kashyap, so this book is far more useful to those working in the area (as the reviewer is). Although this book does not includes as much in the way of "Apodization", "Band-pass Filters", and "Chirped Fiber Bragg Gratings", as Kashyap does. Kashyap also has an extensive chapter on "Fiber Grating Lasers and Amplifiers", which is a small section in this book.

Overall I would say 4.5, but I had to choose 4 or 5, so I went with 5, as this book has been a great help to me. Conversely I gave Kashyap a 3.

So, if you can only buy one FBG book, I think this is it. But check the tables of content for both books and compare them, as Kashyap may be of more use to some.

My final though is that this book does have the feel of an edited collection of some 700+ references, were as Kashyap does appear to have written a book which feels more like a text book. But as a reference book I personally prefer the first.

Regards,

An excellent coverage of Bragg gratings
By A Customer
This book gives an excellent account of fiber Bragg gratings. The chapters on communications and sensing applications provided detailed insight into both areas. The communications arena has received much coverage recently, but until this book there has been very little discussion on sensing applications. A chapter addresses this issue and provides an excellent balance between fine points and overview. There is also a detailed discussion of photosensitivity-again something I found particularly useful, giving the reader a fair chance to follow this complicated field. I particularly liked the clear tables and charts. The remainder of the book was classified in a pretty standard form, with grating manufacture, properties and theory. Again, the authors should be commended on their clear presentation of useful information. As an example of the book's value, I generated the same graphs as presented in the theory section by using the equations therein, and have since generated many different grating structures and profiles-very nice indeed! Finally, it was a pleasant surprise to find a book with an up to date reference list. A suggestion for the publishers regarding subsequent editions, please space the information over more pages, by other book standards this should have been nearer 500 pages.

Excellent introduction to fiber Bragg gratings
By A Customer
I knew nothing about fiber Bragg gratings before I picked up this book. Othonos and Kalli cover just about everything you would want to know about fiber Bragg gratings, from the physics of the fiber itself and how the gratings are created, to applications (including some of the more exotic ones). The material is presented in an understandable manner, with sufficient text descriptions - not just equations that you have to figure out yourself. If you're just beginning to learn about fiber Bragg gratings, I recommend this book highly.

Dramatic artist, natural scientist and philosopher, Plutarch is widely regarded as the most significant historian of his era, writing sharp and succinct accounts of the greatest politicians and statesman of the classical period. Taken from The Lives, a series of biographies spanning the Graeco-Roman age, this collection illuminates the twilight of the old Roman Republic from 157-43 BC. Whether describing the would-be dictators Marius and Sulla, the battle between Crassus and Spartacus, the death of political idealist Crato, Julius Caesar's harrowing triumph in Gaul or the eloquent oratory of Cicero, all offer a fascinating insight into an empire wracked by political divisions. Deeply influential on Shakespeare and many other later writers, they continue to fascinate today with their exploration of corruption, decadence and the struggle for ultimate power.

About the Author
Plutarch(c.50-c.120 AD) was a writer and thinker born into a wealthy, established family of Chaeronea in central Greece. He received the best possible education in rhetoric and philosophy, and traveled to Asia Minor and Egypt. Later, a series of visits to Rome and Italy contributed to his fame, which was given official recognition by the emperors Trajan and Hadrian. Plutarch rendered conscientious service to his province and city (where he continued to live), as well as holding a priesthood at nearby Delphi. His voluminous surviving writings are broadly divided into the "moral"works and theParallel Livesof outstanding Greek and Roman leaders. The former (Moralia) are a mixture of rhetorical and antiquarian pieces, together with technical and moral philosophy (sometimes in dialogue form). The Liveshave been influential from the Renaissance onwards.

Dramatic "Lives" of Plutarch
By AntiochAndy
Though he lived in the Roman Empire, Plutarch was a classical Greek scholar. He was born in Chaeronea in central Greece and spent most of his life there. He studied in Athens as a young man and later wrote on a variety of subjects, including natural science, metaphysics and morals. He also served in various civic capacities during his life, received a high government appointment in Greece from Hadrian, and traveled widely.
Plutarch's interest in writing his "Lives" is the character of the individual, the effects of education and status, the drama of successes and failures, and moral lessons that can be drawn from them. His focus on character and the moral lessons to be learned from history is much like Livy, but Plutarch chose to pursue his purpose more directly by writing biographical sketches of his subjects. These sketches were actually written in pairs, matching what Plutarch saw as a Greek and Roman whose lives were comparable. For example, he paired Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar. To most modern readers, this pairing seems rather artificial, and Penguin has chosen to group the "Lives" by historical period.
Plutarch was not an eyewitness to the events he records. The six men covered in this book lived 150 to 200 years before these "Lives" were written. Plutarch is relying on tradition and other historians for his information. Being a Greek writing after 100 A.D. allows him to be more detached, but his work necessarily reflects the biases and excesses of his sources. Was Sulla, for example, as thorough a monster as portrayed?
The "Lives" make wonderful reading. Plutarch had a simple, straightforward style and an superb eye for the dramatic. The six lives included in "The Fall Of The Roman Republic" are especially well-suited to his style. If you have any interest in Roman history, or if you just enjoy fascinating stories, this is not to be missed.

WHY THE REPUBLIC FELL?
By Rodney J. Szasz
I feel a bit strange writting a review about any classic. Its a bit like writing a review of the Koran or the Bible. There is a reason why all these books are classics, and the reason is that they give some glimpse at the immutable nature of mankind.
Plutarch describes a nation wracked by personal divisions during the Roman Civil War with chapters on some of the major participants in this conflict: a true fall from grace for both the people of Rome and the institution of republicanism. There is a lot here that is exciting, such as the war against the Parthians, Jugurthia and the personal rivalries between Ceasar and Pompey.
The writing moves from what I would classify as mildly interesting, usually at the beginning of each chapter as he relates the youth, familiar, and power influences on the personal development of each live, to ripping tales of combat, honour lost and found, and principled peoples meeting usually, bloody fates. Lives of particular note are Pompey and Cicero in this book, but my personal favourite was Crassus, his fight against the slave revolt of Spartacus and his eventual annihilation with his entire army against the Parthians. The other real character that keeps popping up in each chapter is Cato, a political idealist who commited suicide for his repulican ideals when there was every indication that Ceasar respected him and would have spared his life despite Cato's defection to Pompey.
There is lots here that is of course raw speculation: I think that it is unlikely that Ceasar really had dictatorship on his mind since his early youth, but Plutarch would have us believe that it was almost forordained that Ceasar wanted personal control of the State.
Plutarch is much more interesting to read than Ceasar or Livy. So if you are looking for a good place to enter the classics, this is one good read.

Interesting but has Lazy Editing Syndrome
By R. A Forczyk
Plutarch was a Greek historian who wrote in the 2nd Century AD. This work covers the lives of six key individuals in the twilight of the old Roman Republic from 105-43 BC. Marius and Sulla were soldier-dictators who first sought to gain one-man rule. They were followed by Crassus, Pompey and Caesar. These three lives are the best in the book. The final life is Cicero, the lawyer. There is good military detail on Marius' defeat of the Cimbri, Crassus' defeat at Carrhae and Caesar's triumph at Pharsalus. The Mithraditic Wars in Asia minor are important but difficult to follow due to the lack of any maps. There are no great lessons here, other than the eternal struggle for power. The editor was lazy in this book and should have provided a glossary of key individuals, since there are too many individuals with similar names. There are also no maps - a major flaw.

Rails, Angular, Postgres, and Bootstrap: Powerful, Effective, and Efficient Full-Stack Web Development, by David B. Copeland

As a Rails developer, you care about user experience and performance, but you also want simple and maintainable code. Achieve all that by embracing the full stack of web development, from styling with Bootstrap, building an interactive user interface with AngularJS, to storing data quickly and reliably in PostgreSQL. Take a holistic view of full-stack development to create usable, high-performing applications, and learn to use these technologies effectively in a Ruby on Rails environment.

Rails is a great tool for building web applications, but it's not the best at everything. Embrace the features built into your database. Learn how to use front-end frameworks. Seize the power of the application stack through AngularJS, Bootstrap, and PostgreSQL. When used together, these powerful and easy-to-use tools will open you to a new world of possibilities. In each chapter of this book, you'll learn how these technologies can work together inside a Rails app to deliver well-performing applications that offer great user experiences.

Create a usable and attractive login form using Bootstrap's styles, while ensuring the database table backing it is secure, using Postgres' check constraints. You'll see how creating an advanced Postgres index for a case-insensitive search can speed up your back-end--allowing you to create a highly dynamic user experience using AngularJS. You'll create complex interfaces using Bootstrap's grid, together with Angular's form support, backed by a materialized view for caching within Postgres. You'll get your front-end working with the Asset Pipeline, use Postgres' features from migrations, and write unit tests for all of it. All of this within Rails.

You'll gain the confidence to work at every level of the application stack, bringing the right solution to every problem.

What You Need:

You'll need Postgres 9.4, Rails 4.2, and Ruby 2.2. You'll learn how to install Postgres on your computer or use a free version of it in the cloud. You should have some experience with basic Rails concepts and a cursory understanding of JavaScript, CSS, and SQL, but by no means need to be an expert.

The author is covering a very wide range of topics and he does a good job of providing enough information without getting bogged
By Robert
Overall this is a decent book. The author is covering a very wide range of topics and he does a good job of providing enough information without getting bogged down. He also does a great job of building to an interface and slowly adding complexity to the examples.

I got the paper and Kindle version of the book and found the paper version to be much better (isn't that always the case though?).

A book on building advanced web applications
By Ian K.
I am the architect and implementer of nderground (nderground dot net) a social network built with the Grails framework. The implementation languages of Grails are Groovy and Java. In building nderground I used Postgres (the managed Amazon service RDS/Postgres). I have used Bootstrap to build the nderground web pages.

When I saw the book Rails, Angular, Postgres and Bootstrap I thought that it would be a chance to learn about how the Ruby on Rails framework can apply some of the components I had used with the Grails framework. I was especially interested in learning about how AngularJS could be used. One of the challenges in building modern web applications is the complexity of the client side code and I was hoping that learn whether AngularJS could be used to manage this complexity.

The first thing that the potential reader should know about David Copeland's book is that this is not a book for beginners. If you have never worked with a web application framework like Ruby on Rails, Django or Grails, I think that you're going to have a hard time with this book. The author implicitly assumes that you understand the Model-View-Controller structure that these frameworks use. Similarly, if you don't know anything about JavaScript or Relational Databases and SQL parts of this book may be difficult to understand.

David Copeland's book reminded me of a cookbook that I was once given by the famous French Chef Escoffier. As with this book, Escoffier was writing for experienced practitioners. His recipes are outlines of how to build French cuisine, assuming that the reader has already mastered the necessary technique. I have never been a cook on that level, so I ended up giving the book away (Julia Child is more my speed).

Rails, Angular, Postgres and Bootstrap will help the reader understand how to build powerful web applications, within the Rails framework. The power of modern web frameworks is that they allow the programmer to leverage the framework to create an application more quickly. David Copeland outlines how each of the components can be used and how they fit together in a web application architecture. He provides code snippets in Ruby, HTML/Bootstrap that show how the elements fit together.

The book starts out where most web applications do, with the construction of a login and authentication infrastructure. This uses the Devise Ruby component. As David Copeland notes, building your own authentication can be complicated (I did this for nderground). Leveraging Devise is a way to do this much more rapidly. Devise provides high quality encryption that resists cracking.

A feature of the book that I really liked was the focus on the open source Postgres database. Some developers mindlessly use MySQL because it is the current fad for web databases (and because it is easy to interface MySQL with JavaScript). As Copeland points out, Postgres is a much more powerful, industrial strength database.

The book assumes a fair amount of familiarity with Ruby on Rails. For example, David Copeland refers to Rails' Active Record object-relational-mapping framework and seems to assume that the reader is familiar it. Active Record has some excellent documentation on the Active Record Wiki, but I think that it would have been useful to provide an Active Record overview.

The book jumps into the analysis and optimization of SQL query performance. However, for web many applications, if the designer chooses the database indices properly, Postgres performance will be very good. Only in the case where the database must handle huge amounts of data (e.g., hundreds of gigabytes or a terabyte or so) or there are complex queries is query analysis necessary. The book does not mention the open source Postgres tool PGAdmin, which can be used for query analysis. The examples in the book use the Postgres command line.

In applying Rails, AngularJS and Bootstrap the book necessarily mixes these frameworks in some of the example code. However, at times I had to read the examples carefully to understand what was Bootstrap and what was Angular and how they interacted.

If you have some solid Ruby on Rails experience and are well versed in relational databases, especially Postgres, this book will allow you to build more powerful web applications, with less effort. However, even for those who are experienced, careful reading will be necessary, since the book covers a huge amount of material.

Awesome firehose introduction to full-stack web development
By Thomas B. Gross
I absolutely love this book. I know next-to-nothing about Ruby on Rails or Postgres or Angular.js. I've used bootstrap and have a hacker's understanding of Javascript and css, so I was really hoping this would be a firehose introduction to a complete web stack, and that's what it is. It's really a book for very senior software developers. If you are not familiar with installing software packages on the command line, do not buy this book.

The book is wonderfully OS-agnostic. I love that. No tiresome discussions about differences between Linux and OS X and Windows - the author basically just says "we are doing this on the command line" and it's up to you to figure out the stuff that is specific to your development environment. I've completed the instructions on my Ubuntu 14.04 desktop machine up to the point where I have a Ruby on Rails application registering me as a user in a database. There are a couple of details missing from the text that I managed to figure out by googling error messages. Basically you will need to install some development packages, in particular, you will need to install libpq-dev and postgresql-dev. There is also some trickery to get the right version (9.4) of postgresql. Like I said, just google the errors messages you get and you will find the answers.

Another thing I really like about the book is that it references JavaScript: The Good Parts for those needing an introduction to JS - this is a sure sign that the author knows what he is talking about. Based on that, I have ordered his recommended Agile Web Development with Rails 4 (Facets of Ruby) so I can learn more about the fundamentals of Rails.

Social Work Treatment: Interlocking Theoretical ApproachesFrom Oxford University Press

First published in 1974, Social Work Treatment remains the most popular and trusted compendium of theories available to social work students and practitioners. It explores the full range of theoretical approaches that drive social work treatment and knowledge development, from psychoanalysis to crisis intervention.

This treasure trove of practice knowledge equips professionals with a broad array of theoretical approaches, each of which shine a spotlight on a different aspect of the human condition. Emphasizing the importance of a broad-based theoretical approach to practice, it helps the reader avoid the pitfalls of becoming overly identified with a narrow focus that limits their understanding of clients and their contexts.

This sweeping overview of the field untangles the increasingly complex problems, ideologies, and value sets that define contemporary social work practice. The result is an essential A-to-Z reference that charts the full range of theoretical approaches available to social workers regardless of their setting or specialty.

Review

"In the fifth edition of this seminal text, Francis Turner has once again gathered information useful for the educator, student, and practitioner alike. Each of the expertly written thirty-eight chapters provides a rich resource filled with theory-based explanations, and a framework for the subsequent concepts and strategies that lead to intervention success. In each of the approaches to practice, one unified message is heard throughout the chapter, clearly calling for an open and flexible approach to practice that takes into account all aspects of the person's internal and external environment. Solving problem behaviors is never simple and providing an interlocking framework that allows for choice in selecting theoretical perspectives opens the door to consistent, comprehensive, efficient, and effective service delivery." --Sophia F. Dziegielewski, PhD, Professor, School of Social Work, University of Cincinnati

"This much-needed update to Turner's classic and comprehensive text on social work treatment theories includes nine new theories that have become influential in social work practice since the fourth edition published in 1996. It is essential that experienced practitioners as well as those new to the field be conversant with the theories and approaches that are shaping social work practice today. Turner's new edition, authored by recognized scholars and experienced clinicians, brings together all of the relevant social work treatment theories in today's postmodern world, making it easy for readers to become informed and to begin applying the theories in their practice." --Wallace J. Gingerich, PhD, Professor Emeritus, Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, Case Western Reserve University

"Yet again, one of the continent's most published and insightful social work scholars has created an excellent and accessible compendium of chapters. There is an expanded focus on a variety of new topics, in addition to an excellent reassessment of longstanding and major components of social work treatment theories. Strongly recommended for scholars, practitioners, and students alike." --John Graham, PhD, Murray Fraser Professor of Community Economic Development, University of Calgary

"Who but Turner could so successfully recruit such an outstanding cadre of experts for such a comprehensive review and analysis of social work treatment? Turner piques our curiosity, makes us think through the thorny issues, and reminds us of our responsibility to provide the best treatment possible to our clients. In this fifth edition, Turner continues his commitment to promoting responsible and best practices in clinical social work and continues as a premier mentor to us all. His years of study and practice have coalesced into this superb book to which I give my greatest recommendation." --Karen M. Sowers, PhD, Dean and Professor, College of Social Work, University of Tennessee

Turner-Social Work Treatment
By Lou(c)
This was a required textbook for an Integrated Methods graduate Social Work course. It is an excellent book. I would highly recommend it. My only complaint is that even the newest edition (4th) is pretty old. I realize that some of these theories haven't changed, so that doesn't matter. However, I like to use the bibliographies for other research; the references are all even older than the book... Turner needs to update it again...

This book does not contain the most up-to-date therapy techniques. Some oldy-but-goody techniques are helpful.
