About the Author
International grandmaster Yuri Averbakh is one of the authentic legends of chess. His career includes participation in the storied 1953 Z�rich Candidates Tournament, winning the USSR Championship as well as being recognized as one of the great endgame experts of all time. His contributions to chess history and culture have been equally impressive.

Not what it seems

I respect the author quite a bit, who is now deceased. I bought this book expecting that it would cover the time period it says. However, the book proper ends in the 16th century. There is a 3-1/5 page epilog that briefly covers from the 16th century to the present. This is what I wanted the book to cover the most, and it skimps on it. The author said that it would be in his next book. Of course, he died without completing it.
The book has no index, which means that you can't easily look up something. This is a major flaw in a book. I don't like the organization of the book - most chapters are about specific countries. I'd rather have a more chronological presentation.
On the positive side, it has quite a few good photographs - mostly in color. The photos are a lot better than the ones in any similar book that I have.

Interesting how games evolve over the years.
Perhaps in the future modern chess will evolve again.
