Robert Lax’s Hermit’s Guide to Home Economics combines three long poems the poet composed on the Island of Patmos, where he lived a life separated from the rest of the world in the natural setting of that desert isle. Lax writes humorously about his “hermit” life, as if he were King Solomon doing a stand-up routine. About the Author
Robert Lax (1915–2000) was born in Olean, NY, and lived in France, New York City, and Hollywood before settling on the island of Patmos for the last thirty years of his life. His publications extend to hundreds of pieces, many published by small presses, and many published in Europe. His early major collection 33 Poems was published by New Directions in 1988.
Paul J. Spaeth has edited and wrote about Robert Lax for many years, having founded the Lax Archives at St. Bonaventure University, where he is the Director of the Library, Special Collections Librarian, and also teaches.

A Poetic Treasure

New Directions has done it again, spotlighting a gifted poetic voice for readers yearning for authenticity, spirituality, with humor thrown in.
"A Hermit's Guide to Home Economics" is a beautifully put together small book spotlighting some of poet Robert Lax's unpublished treasures. The excellent "Afterword by Paul Spaeth gives us a look at the poet's life and outlook.
