Diane Luby Lane is Founder/Executive Director of Get Lit-Words Ignite, Los Angeles' leading nonprofit presenter of literary performance, education and teen poetry programs, and the Get Lit Players, an award-winning classic teen poetry troupe, who perform for over 10,000 teens each year. Lane is author of Words of Women, a compendium of original monologues for omen published around the world and has appeared in numerous films, television shows, and national commercials. Her critically acclaimed one-woman show, Deep Sea Diving (AKA Born Feet First), has toured high schools and colleges across America with poet Jimmy Santiago Baca. Great book with a unique voice!

Ok, this book totally rocked my world. I kept cracking up over and over again. I loved being inside of 11th grader James Hoff's world, listening to his rants and watching him pine over several girls. His observations about the world were just too good. This was definitely my kind of book. I felt like I was sort of laughing at how extreme he was but at the same time kind of got him. While he was obviously a lot of talk and not a lot of action I loved where he was coming from and would love to have a friend like that.

While I loved James rants and sort of easier said than done thoughts about the world I could see how he might get on other people's nerves. I really liked the way the book was written, how it was a mix of James rants, journal entries, and conversations with other people. There is an especially insightful essay about nature towards the end of the book which I really liked. I also liked the different relationships he explores with a few girls throughout the book. It was definitely harder for him to be Mr. Tough Guy when he was around Sadie his ex-girlfriend.

It was nice to see how James kind of mellowed out and found a place where he belonged towards the end of the book instead of trying to stand out from everyone as much as he could towards the beginning of the book. I'll definitely be checking out some of author Blake Nelson's other work!

Unique voice

James is a 17 year old high schooler who feels that the planet is being destroyed by cars and the consumer culture. Rather then working on useless (in his mind) canned food drives and bike path committees like his ex-girlfriend, he spends his time writing angry essays and defacing thrift store clothes to make a statement.

I choose this book because it speaks out against America's consumerist culture and I love books that help people become more aware. The book started out really good. I loved James' essays about why we should destroy all cars and the person who influenced him. I loved his commentary on his teachers and his ex-girlfriend. But as the book went on, James got more and more self-centered. Was he really interested in the state of the world or was he just trying to get attention. He was so against cars but didn't have a problem getting rides in them--but refused to own one himself. I did like the characters voice and I liked the story--I just would have liked to see a little more character growth. In all, a good read.

An Endearing, Funny, Coming-of-age, Young Adult Story

Can a book be too funny? I would have said no until I read or made several attempts to read DESTROY ALL CARS. I made two attempts to read the book at night. Both times, I woke my husband up from laughing so hard. So I put book away until one night I knew he'd be up late. I made it three-quarters of the way through before I realized there was no way I was going to be able to go to bed after reading this book. It was making me too excited for nighttime use.

I ended up completing this book in the afternoon. That's a great time for a pick-me-up. I never knew how I felt about the main character, James Hoff, a junior in high school. He definitely had a negative outlook, but the way he expressed it on paper had me doubling over in laughter. The reader got to know him through essays he submitted to is English teacher, Mr. Cogweiller as well as his journal entries.

James is all against Consumer Americans. He believes if we do away with all personally owned vehicles, we could save our planet. There is more going on with James though. He is trying to find his way, but it's pretty hard.

DESTROY ALL CARS is his coming-of-age story. It's endearing, hilarious, and a must read book!

Understandable but complex - for a complex subject

I used this book for an undergrad Architecture course. I had a great teacher, and we only looked at certain sections in the book. There is an awful lot to cover in a single semester.

The book is written for students with very little formal electronics knowledge, but you do need to know some basic logic and hardware concepts. It is based on the i86 architecture, making generalizations where possible. If you have a strong background, or want to learn very detailed concepts - then there are better choices. Sometimes this book over-simplifies concepts to reach its intended audience.

I later found the book useful as a reference tool in a graduate architecture class. Especially the sections on memory - cache, virutal, pagefiles, etc.. Even though my grad class was on the MiPS architecture, the concepts are the same.

Overall, this was a decent text for an undergraduate course.

As other reviewers, (good and bad) have noted - when you are learning, you should always use additional references. Don't depend on this book alone to teach you.

Part of what makes this text so difficult to understand is the author's inability to use consistent terms while trying to explain material. In the first chapter, a simple And gate is referred to as 'AND', 'x^y', 'x.y', 'xy', '()()', and 'and'. All true, but used interchangeably while trying to explain makes the concepts incredibly difficult to decipher, particularly when variations for representing other boolean concepts are added to the fray.
The best part of the book, as far as I can tell, is that the key terms are in bold so I know what to plug into Google to try and figure out what it is.

A failure for purely academic reasons

The first chapter is the most important in the book. And yet it is riddled with poor grammar, truth table errors, no answers to questions in the back of book etc. I don't understand how someone who understands the subject can convey so little meaningful information. Actually I do understand, and this book's academic blasphemy should be burnt black as ruined toast. Money down the drain, as Ricky Ricardo "splained" things to Lucy at a much higher level. This book leaves me bitter if you hadn't noticed.

About the Author

HARI P. KRISHNAN, PHD, is a fund manager at Cross-Border Capital, where he runs systematic macro and volatility strategies. Cross-Border is a London-based hedge fund with roughly US$300 million in assets. He previously managed a CTA for a London-based asset management boutique, and he was an executive director and co-head of alternative asset allocation at Morgan Stanley (Chicago and London). In addition, Dr. Krishnan has worked as an options trading strategist and as a senior economist at the Chicago Board of Trade. He received a PhD in applied math from Brown University, and he was a post-doctoral research scientist at the Columbia Earth Institute, Columbia University, before moving into finance.

This is an excellent treatment of an important problem. Whilst being quantitatively thorough,it reflects the authors nuanced and intuitive understanding of what it takes to hedge under duress. Highly readable, with a dry humour and conversational style,I found myself being pleasantly propelled through the flash crashes, sudden currency de-peggings, and even the synchronicity of fireflies (which explains the cover design) in elucidating world events & their full impact on markets through the coolly reflective analysis put forward here.
By using original models and simulations, the author guides the reader succinctly through the process of learning to read the signs in order to understand the 'second leg down' i.e. the almost synchronised widespread liquidations that invariable follow the first market crash. Furthermore, the author acknowledges that increasingly there is little or no time to anticipate or read the signs, and therefore goes on to provide clever options strategies to mitigate in such events. Essential reading for portfolio manager who needs that critical string to their bow.

I highly recommend this book. It is entertaining and readable, yet contains extremely valuable advice and examples for the risk management practitioner. The book blends information on many different products, including the term structure of futures curves, and how the term structure can affect trading strategies. There are loads of empirical studies to support (or refute) various strategies, but in all cases the author cautions about practical obstacles that can occasionally cause an elegant theory to go bad. All chapters have summaries that are helpful when wishing to refer back to specific topics (for example, on short dated options that can be employed in an emergency, long dated options that have different characteristics than short dates, and peculiarities of VIX options). This book is of benefit to both speculators and hedgers.
