Revisiting Loss: Memory, Trauma and Nostalgia in the Novels of Kazuo Ishiguro, by Wojciech Drag

Loss is the core experience which determines the identity of Kazuo Ishiguro's narrators and shapes their subsequent lives. Whether a traumatic ordeal, an act of social degradation, a failed relationship or a loss of home, the painful event serves as a sharp dividing line between the earlier, meaningful past and the period afterwards, which is infused with a sense of lack, dissatisfaction and nostalgia. Ishiguro's narrators have been unable to confine their loss to the past and remain preoccupied by its legacy, which ranges from suppressed guilt to a keen sense of failure or disappointment. Their immersion in the past finds expression in the narratives which they weave in order to articulate, justify or merely understand their experiences. Their reconstructions of the past are interpreted as exercises in misremembering and self-deception which enable them to sustain their illusions and save them from despair. Revisiting Loss is the first book-length study of memory encompassing Ishiguro's entire novelistic output. It adopts a highly interdisciplinary approach, combining a selection of philosophical (Jacques Derrida, Paul Ricoeur, and Jean Starobinski) and psychological perspectives (Sigmund Freud, Frederic Bartlett, Jacques Lacan, and Daniel L. Schacter). The book offers a thoroughly researched critical survey drawing on all published critical monographs and collections of academic articles on Ishiguro's work.

Review
"Kazuo Ishiguro is one of today's finest and most human of writers, and his fiction is fuelled by the intricacies memory plays in our lives and identities. Wojciech Drag's study is an incisive analysis of the complex problems surrounding memory, history and trauma which Ishiguro's narratives put to the reader. Drag's comprehensive theoretical account of memory is impressive to say the least, whilst the textual analysis is original and insightful. This book is a welcome addition to Ishiguro scholarship, and should find the wide academic readership it deserves." -Sebastian Groes, Senior Lecturer in English Literature, University of Roehampton; co-editor of Kazuo Ishiguro: Contemporary Critical Perspectives "This well-researched study offers a new perspective on the relations between the experience of trauma and the workings of memory. Drawing on theoretical approaches to loss and trauma, Wojciech Drag traces the fates of Ishiguro's anguished protagonists torn between conflicting urges: to forget and to remember, to know and not to know, to come to terms with the loss and to forever nurse their wound." -Krystyna Stamirowska, Professor of English Literature, Jagiellonian University, Cracow

About the Author
Wojciech Drag holds a PhD in English Literature and is currently a Lecturer at Wroclaw University in Poland. Most of his publications have focused on the contemporary novel, particularly on the work of Kazuo Ishiguro, Julian Barnes, John Banville and J. M. Coetzee.

"The problems that exist in the world todaycannot be solved by the level of thinking that created them."--Albert Einstein

Security now has unprecedented importance in the information industry. It compels every business and organization to adopt proactive or reactive measures that protect data, processes, communication, and resources throughout the information lifecycle. In a continuous evolution, every day a new breed of business systems is finding its place and changes to existing systems are becoming common in the industry. These changes are designed to improve organizational efficiency and cost effectiveness and to increase consumer satisfaction. These improvements are often accompanied by newer security risks, to which businesses must respond with appropriate security strategies and processes. At the outset, securing an organization's information requires a thorough understanding of its security-related business challenges, potential threats, and best practices for mitigation of risks by means of appropriate safeguards and countermeasures. More importantly, it becomes essential that organizations adopt trusted proactive security approaches and enforce them at all levels--information processing, information transmittal, and information storage.

What This Book Is About

This book is meant to be a hands-on practitioner's guide to security. It captures a wealth of experience about using patterns-driven and best practices-based approaches to building trustworthy IT applications and services. The primary focus of the book is on the introduction of a security design methodology using a proven set of reusable patterns, best practices, reality checks, defensive strategies, and assessment checklists that can be applied to securing J2EE applications, Web Services, Identity Management, Service Provisioning, and Personal Identification. The book presents a catalog of 23 new security patterns and 101 best practices, identifying use case scenarios, architectural models, design strategies, applied technologies, and validation processes. The best practices and reality checks provide hints on real-world deployment and end-user experience of what works and what does not. The book also describes the architecture, mechanisms, standards, technologies, and implementation principles of applying security in J2EE applications, Web Services, Identity Management, Service Provisioning, and Personal Identification and explains the required fundamentals from the ground up.

Starting with an overview of today's business challenges, including the identification of security threats and exploits and an analysis of the importance of information security, security compliance, basic security concepts, and technologies, the book focuses in depth on the following topics:

  • Security mechanisms in J2SE, J2EE, J2ME, and Java Card platforms
  • Web Services security standards and technologies
  • Identity Management standards and technologies
  • Security design methodology, patterns, best practices, and reality checks
  • Security patterns and design strategies for J2EE applications
  • Security patterns and design strategies for Web Services
  • Security patterns and design strategies for Identity Management
  • Security patterns and design strategies for Service Provisioning
  • Building an end-to-end security architecture--case study
  • Secure Personal Identification strategies for using Smart Cards and Biometrics

The book emphasizes the use of the Java platform and stresses its importance in developing and deploying secure applications and services.

What This Book Is Not

While this book is heavily based on Java technologies, we do not describe the specific Java APIs intended for basic J2EE application development (e.g., JSPs, Servlets, and EJB). If you wish to learn the individual API technologies, we highly recommend the J2EE blueprints, tutorials, and recommended books on the official Java home page at http://java.sun.com.

We use UML diagrams to document the patterns and implementation strategies. If you wish to learn the UML basics, please refer to The Unified Modeling Language User Guide by Grady Booch, James Rumbaugh, and Ivar Jacobson (Addison-Wesley, 1999).

Who Should Read This Book?

This book is meant for all security enthusiasts, architects, Java developers, and technical project managers who are involved with securing information systems and business applications. The book is also valuable for those who wish to learn basic security concepts and technologies related to Java applications, Web Services, Identity Management, Service Provisioning, and Personal Identification using Smart Cards and Biometrics.

The book presumes that the reader has a basic conceptual knowledge of development and deployment of business applications using Java. We have attempted to write this book as an introduction to all security mechanisms used in the design, architecture, and development of applications using the Java platform. We intended our use of the methodology, patterns, best practices, and pitfalls to be an invaluable resource for answering the real-world IT security problems that software architects and developers face every day.

Most of us no longer have time to read a software development book from cover to cover. Therefore, we have broken this book into different technology parts; the book may thus be read in almost in any sequence according to the reader's specific interests.

How This Book Is Organized

The content of this book is organized into seven parts:

Part I: Introduction

Part I introduces the current state of the industry, business challenges, and various application security issues and strategies. It then presents the basics of security.

Java guys, go for it
By Hemant Kesarkar
This is the best book I ever had for Java security. This book talks everything you need to know about java security architecture and how to implement them with patterns. In addition to patterns, the book also recommends security bestpractices considerations for J2EE production, how to do proactive and reactive security assessments using well-defined checklists, security design case-study for portal. Undoubtedly, this book is very easy to understand, good code examples and nicely organized to support the needs of a Java developer. It is highly recommended for anyone wants to get involved with security architecture in J2EE applications and web services. If you are a Java guy..then go for it.

The *ONLY* Working JAAS Example
By Jerry Hewett
Considering how many other completely useless WS-Security references (and websites, and example programs, and...) I've been through, it was a huge relief to FINALLY find one that contains WORKING code for JAAS authorization. Even though I still don't have all the answers I need (thanks to truely hideous examples and the complete and utter lack of any worthwhile or accurate documentation in JWSDP 2.0) this book is worth its weight in gold, AFAIC.

A must for every web java coder
By Stephen Northcutt
They say there is an average of a 1000 web defacements a day on the Internet ( where do they get such statistics?). And yet, if you talk about security to an application development shop . . . until recently they looked at you like you were nuts.

That is changing and more high quality resources for secure code development are becoming available.

However, this book is going to be tough to beat.

Chapters one and two are forgettable, but that is forgiveable, because they only go to page 95 and there is 900 pages of real meat ahead. At 39.00 if this book is sold by the pound, it is one of the best buys on the shelf.

The author team does the best job I have seen in a long time of making the concept clear in plain english and then jumping into the here is how you do it.

NOTE: I loaned my copy to a friend who is a coder last Friday and he just called to tell me he loves the book, so at least two coders are pretty impressed with this one.

A great introductions to the role of psychology in marketing
By Jon Wingrd
I bought this book as it just came out in Sweden. From the first pages I was hooked and has since finishing it often returned for brief and insightful reminders. Nathalie writes in a way that makes it easy to get right to the core on each topic. As an academic I love the fact that there are references to studies and further reading all through the book. It's a must have for any one interested in the field.

Thorough, well-researched book with TONS of ideas
By Jacob D Gerber
I read this book a few months ago, and I still have it sitting right on my desk, filled with bookmarks of places I want to re-visit, re-think, and re-implement in my own marketing. This book is just so full of fantastic information that I couldn't digest it all at one time.

The endnotes alone are worth the price of the book. I've read some other books that mainly source secondary resources like blog articles that rehash other primary sources. Nathalie Nahai has actually done an amazing amount of primary research, and the endnotes are filled with all kinds of studies on a huge breadth of topics.

Still, it doesn't read like a dry, academic tome. It's brilliant, deep stuff, but it isn't anything that a person of average intelligence would struggle to understand.

This book has become one of my top recommendations on the subject.

Psych and marketing!
By Grace
I am a student who is very much interested in digital marketing. I heard about Nathalie's book while I was studying abroad in the UK, but I didn't really pay attention/purchase it until I came back to the states. I fully regret the fact that I didn't pick up the book while abroad because this has a lot of useful info. Nathalie includes a lot of interesting real case studies, plus the book is filled with colors.. I love colors! Haha, that might make this book interesting for those who get board reading, right?

What I love about this book is how Nathalie draws from her background of psychology with additional support in neuroscience and behavioral economics to create awareness of how marketing has changed from the local to global context. She has made this a very easy read and I recommend it digital marketing beginners/those who have little to no knowledge in this industry. Also it might be useful for those who are planning to open their own website or those who want to update.

Great Fun coloring youthful versions of the Marvel superheros and super villains – printed on one side of perforated pages
By iiiireader
[[VIDEOID:2b301f869939fb6fec0ed904b0f9c9e]]This coloring book is simply excellent fun. For anyone who enjoys Marvel Comics, the designs in this book can bring a smile to your face. Who would think that the good guys and the bad guys were such adorable youngsters.

As soon as the coloring book arrived, my husband and I started a bit of a tug-of-war over it. I won but we are ordering a copy for him as well. I'm hoping to see more of this type of “comic” coloring book in the future. The printing and publishing of the book is spot on with one sided printing and perforated pages.

I plan on doing some designs in the traditional colors of garb associated with each character but then I want to play a bit with color and give them my version of their costume. My only problem with the book was deciding which character(s) to start with. I definitely did not start with the first page and go from there. I looked for something fun and found Deadpool. He was fun and easy to color with alcohol-based markers with a little colored pencil accent as well.

This is what I experienced while coloring in this book and testing my color medium on the paper:

59 Young Marvel character designs in a slightly smaller format

Designs are printed on one side of the page

Paper is medium weight, white, slightly rough, and perforated

Glue bound but you can easily remove pages at the perforations

Design may cross over the perforations by a tad but nothing of importance will be lost if you remove a page from the book.

Easy to get at all corners of the design (though many designs reach extend border of the page on three sides.

Alcohol-based markers bleed through this paper

Water-based markers, India ink pens, and gel pens all leave colorful shadows on the back of the page.

Colored pencils work well with this paper. I was able to get good color, blend, and layer well with both wax and oil based pencils. Hard lead pencils can dent through the page.

I recommend either removing the page from the book to color or putting a safety blotter page under the page you are working on. That will keep the pages below safe from seeping ink or dents.

Visible Gods, by Douglas Edison Harding

Visible Gods is an imaginary dialogue between Socrates and four fictitious modern-day characters. Socrates' worldview is of a living cosmos with man only half-way up the hierarchy of all beings; above him reign suprahuman beings of great majesty and power - the visible gods. The moderns with whom Socrates converses disdain his ancient Greek cosmos as primitive and false. Yet as Socrates questions them in typically ironic fashion about the discoveries of science, it's not at all clear that the scientists' view of "a dead universe populated here and there with rare accidents of life" is right. Indeed, the more the moderns argue their case, the more Socrates shows they are arguing his... Douglas Harding completed Visible Gods in 1955. But the 'living universe' does not go out of date! Join this conversation and discover - rediscover - the brilliant, shining, truly majestic life that is within you and without you. Put aside modern preconceptions and see the world with fresh, innocent, truthful eyes, and be amazed!

Treat For Harding Fans
By Bill Statton
This short book, really more of an essay or a long article, will delight fans of Douglas Harding and his profound and sometimes difficult major work--"The Hierarchy of Heaven And Earth". Many ideas discussed in the Hierarchy book reappear here in an engaging, easier-to-read follow up work which consists of a dialogue among Socrates and four moderns--two scientists, one psychologist, and a theologian. Here you'll find many fascinating ideas to ponder about our identity in (and with) the world and their implications for viewing life with value and meaning, and living a life open to its Source. Written in 1955, a few years after the Hierarchy book, "Visible Gods" is here published for the first time,

The Visible World
By Flatlander
An amazing book by Mr. Harding!!! I have been a fan and reader for years, and my only regret is that this book is unavailable as a hard copy. Reading the electronic version is a chore predicated upon the availability of technical devices and support. I find a book, with paper and print, far superior. Despite that, the content is extraordinary. If you don't see the world differently after reading this material, you aren't really looking..

Review

This book contains a wealth of examples to illustrate the skills which Middleman and Wood have identified and described. It provides practical and direct guidelines, and is written in a clear and engaging manner.

(Maeda Galinsky, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill)

Middleman and Wood contribute a valuable text in their Skills for Direct Practice in Social Work. This is a fine culmination of their concern with the basic tasks and procedures through which practitioners accomplish helping objectives. They provide an expanded and comprehensive repertoire of practical skills, which are well identified and illustrated, with clear conditions and principles given for their use. The conception of skills in terms of inner (perceptual and cognitive), interactional, group, and strategic categories, as well as their theoretical and practical exposition, constitute a substantial advance for social work theory and practice.

(Max Siporin, SUNY Albany, School of Social Welfare)

Start with the Basics
By Bruce D. Hartsell
I used a forerunner of this book when I was in graduate school twenty years ago. I pull out the current edition when I need to review basic skills for myself or for supervisees. Middleman and Wood do a thorough job of defining sixty-three basic skills for direct paractice in social work. These skills are the foundation of any professional counseling work, and their absence from the curriculum of many schools is too well reflected in the professions.
While social workers and counselors often pick up these skills along the way, the concise, straightforward listing and explication by Middleman and Wood is a better way to go.
I think any counselor or social worker would benefit from a review of these basics, and any trainee or intern who has not encountered this book would benefit from it.
