My favorite in the series so far!

Tate outdid herself with this ebook, which is chock full of both historical data and actionable information. If you're like me, you probably understand the basics of baking powder/baking soda --- you can use the latter if you include an acid, but need the former if you don't. But I've been left scratching my head many times when I saw a recipe that called for baking soda without anything I considered an acid to prompt the leavening reaction. Tate's book explained why, listing many culinary acids I hadn't considered and also explaining that baking soda actually causes some rising action by itself at high temperatures (such as in cookies).

Then she delves even deeper, looking at other ways you can get baked goods to rise without purchasing either baking powder or soda. Beaten eggs are a moderately mainstream method, but have you ever heard of the idea of soaking wood ashes and using that alkaline liquid along with an acid to puff your biscuits up? If the world comes to an end and baking soda is no longer available in the grocery store, you'll definitely want this book! And, in the meantime, the copious recipes at the end would be a really fun homesteading and/or homeschooling experiment to combine science with lunch. Actually, as I type this, just looking at the recipes is making me hungry....

About the Author
Dr. David Whitwell is a graduate (‘with distinction’) of the University of Michigan and the Catholic University of America, Washington DC (PhD, Musicology, Distinguished Alumni Award, 2000) and has done post-graduate study at the University of Vienna and has studied conducting with Eugene Ormandy and at the Akademie fur Musik, Vienna. Prior to coming to Northridge, Dr. Whitwell participated in concerts throughout the United States and Asia as Associate First Horn in the USAF Band and Orchestra in Washington DC, and in recitals throughout South America in cooperation with the United States State Department. He is a past president of the College Band Directors National Association, a member of the Prasidium of the International Society for the Promotion of Band Music, and was a member of the founding board of directors of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE). In 1964 he was made an honorary life member of Kappa Kappa Psi, a national professional music fraternity. In September, 2001, he was a delegate to the UNESCO Conference on Global Music in Tokyo. He has been knighted by sovereign organizations in France, Portugal and Scotland and has been awarded the gold medal of Kerkrade, The Netherlands, and the silver medal of Wangen, Germany, the highest honor given wind conductors in the United States, the medal of the Academy of Wind and Percussion Arts (National Band Association) and the highest honor given wind conductors in Austria, the gold medal of the Austrian Band Association. He is a member of the Hall of Fame of the California Music Educators Association. Dr. Whitwell’s publications include more than 127 articles on wind literature including publications in Music and Letters (London), the London Musical Times, the Mozart-Jahrbuch (Salzburg), and 39 books, among which is his 13-volume History and Literature of the Wind Band and Wind Ensemble and an 8-volume series on Aesthetics in Music. In addition to numerous modern editions of early wind band music his original compositions include 5 symphonies. David Whitwell was named as one of six men who have determined the course of American bands during the second half of the 20th century, in the definitive history, The Twentieth Century American Wind Band (Meredith Music). David Whitwell is one of nine men described by Paula A. Crider in The Conductor’s Legacy (Chicago: GIA, 2010) as ‘the legendary conductors’ of the 20th century.

A Fascinating Story of Love and Determination

This romance novel is set against the backdrop of pre-civil war times in Louisiana. As such, the love story is beset by the aura of danger for both the white plantation owner's daughter and the black slave who was seduced by her. This black novelist takes us into to the psyche of the Southern white heroine who is both an abolitionist and a women's rights activist. It is rich in historical narrative as well as insight into the relationships among women both black and white. The mysteries surrounding the ancestors of the founders of the first black United Methodist Church in Mansfield are at the core of this historical journey. For those of us with roots in this little country town, it answers many questions. Traditional romance novels are popular because the heroine always wins. But in this novel, the "victory" is an unexpected twist that will keep you engaged until the last page is turned.

Bernhardt hits home runs.

With the third edition of Data Analysis for Continuous School Improvement, Victoria Bernhardt continues to hit home runs.
Writing in an easy-to-read style, Dr. Bernhardt does a superb job of explaining the need for more than student achievement data in order to continuously improve schools at all levels. Too many people who claim they want to improve schools do not incorporate demographics, perceptions, and school processes in their improvement plan; and they wonder why their plans fall short. Using the Continuous School Improvement framework that Dr. Bernhardt developed, all educators can develop a vision that has a laser focus on school improvement and develop a logical and sustainable plan to implement the vision. The activities and facilitation guides in the Appendix are wonderful tools to enable the readers to do the work themselves. College professors in Colleges of Education should be using this book. In fact, all educators should have this book in their personal library.

Helpful tool for any school!

After I attended a training session in June, I felt that I absolutely needed my own copy of this book. I'm happy to say that it was money well-spent! Dr. Bernhardt and her team have done a great job of laying out explicit examples and clear procedures of how to collect the data that CSI schools need. It helps that I've been through the training; I wouldn't really recommend trying to use this book without it. You could muddle through, I'm sure, but do so at your own risk. (I'm not a compensated endorser, so don't worry about bias or nepotism, at least not from me!)

Great One for School Administrators

The best use of this text is for a school administrative team that wants to develop a school improvement plan. The work in this text is well-explained and has excellent models. A school would need at least a year to go through the whole cycle explained in this book. I thought of using it for a grad course I teach, but it's almost impossible for grad students to conduct this work unless they're already an administrator.

An Experiential, Exhilerating Positive Pychology Treasure!

Bottom line? I LOVED this interactively brilliant positive psychology workbook (actually, it is so much fun, it's more like a "playbook"!). It is a book about you and the stories you tell yourself about who you think you are. How is that for intrigue? But get ready for some surprising insights. Your life may well welcomed re-writes as Tarragona helps you pan for more personal gold!

I read it twice. The first time, I took scads of resource notes for my coaching clients. The second time, I enjoyed my own totally personalized journey answering the fascinating, curious exercises. Wow!!! A treasure trove.

I cannot begin to express the amazement I felt reading and working on this jewel of a book. Tarragona certainly masters her subject and is blessed with a pen that makes it not only a pleasurable learning experience but a joy to work on the creative exercises. As a practicing therapist I admire her capacity to sinthecise the hundreds of hours of studying she has done into not only an easy but very pleasurable and enriching journey.
I feel enriched and improved personally and this book has become an indispensable companion in my practice as a therapist.

I truly recommend this book. The author is very clear and specific about issues that may bother all of us, but somehow is tailored to your needs, your life, your history.

Really easy to read, I read it twice and it helped me very much. For all that you get out of this book the price is a bargain.

You wont regret getting this one!

Exceeds expectations!

Wow! I bought this book a couple of months ago, but just got around to opening it up last night to study for a histology test. I expected to find a slew of labelled photomicrographs to review, but this book is actually so much more! It is really an anatomy, physiology and histology text all in one - and it is done very very well.

The book is divided into 24 chapters, with chapters by system, tissue type, basic cell biology as well as tissue/slide preparation. Each chapter covers the anatomy and physiology of the system or tissue in question extremely well. The text gets right to the point, but is still very complete in its explanations. Within each paragraph, key words are bolded in red, so you can quickly find the exact topic you are interested in within a subject. All topics are supplemented with fully labelled light and electron photomicrographs of each structure, tissue and cell. Illustrations also accompany a majority of the micrographs to clarify things.

All illustrations and micrographs are thoroughly labelled. Within text pictures are typically 1/4 to 1/2 page in size, and each chapter has its own set of full-page color plates for even better up-close visualization and study. The full-page color photomicrographs at the end of each chapter are fully labelled, but go even further than that with exact descriptions of each label on the opposing page. This is really amazing, because, for instance, on a slide of the kidney that I was studying, not only were the proximal and distal tubules and collecting ducts labelled, there were also accompanying descriptions on the opposing page as to why one was different from another in these very similar looking structures. With labels alone I would have had a difficult time identifying these structures on my own slides, but with the added description accompanying each label as to why one was slightly different from another, I can now easily pick out the nuances of each that differentiate them.

An added plus are the clinical correlations (several per chapter) as well as online access to the book with a special "scratch-off" code inside the front cover. I also like that chapters have a color strip and subject title (e.g. ovary) down the lateral margin of each page; this makes it extremely easy to find the section/topic you are looking for by simply thumbing the pages versus having to look in the table of contents to find the chapter/page for the system you are after.

Note that the book does have a soft cover, so if you are going to be carrying it around with you, you'll want to put a plastic laminate on it to protect it. The pages themselves are all in full-color on high quality, semi-gloss stock. Total pages are 974 and the book itself is just a bit over 1 inch thick.

Overall, this is a really an amazing book! You could definitely use it as a basic physiology text in addition to being your histology reference source and learning guide. There are so many features in this book that have been well thought out that the authors and publishers really should be applauded for -- the in-text bolding of key words, the subject strips down the side of each page for easy thumbing, but especially for the excellent photomicrographs, labelling and explanations of each cell type and structure. Well done and highly recommended! Worth far more than the sub-$100 price being charged!

Good, but a little too much

This book is dense. As a first year medical student the one thing that you are very limited on is time. This book will definitely have a lot of information that will help you pass your exams, but it also has a lot of information that is better left for PhDs instead of MDs. Don't get me wrong, the more information a doctor has the better, but when you are just trying to pass your first year instead of step1 or beyond then this book can be a little much. I was fortunate to use the last edition before than this edition and I honestly think that the previous edition was a little easier to read because not everything was bold faced and colored like in the new edition. The book kind of went over hill with all the different color fonts and that can get kind of annoying if this is your first read through. However, the nice thing that this version has versus previous editions is that it has more pictures, which is nice if you have never seen a structure and need multiple slides of it. Your university will also likely have a set of online slides, but it is nice to have the ones in the books just to test to see if you can identify the structure in different view or preparation. I wish I could recommend another book that was more concise but this is the only histo book I have had experience with. If you get it, know that there is no way in hell that your prof will be able to cover everything that is in a chapter in just one lecture, so read cautiously and don't think about learning everything that is written because it is very likely that you will get so thinned out by all the information that you will do poorly.

Kindle Version: Horrible

This review is specifically for the *Kindle version.* It is HORRIBLY formatted; there are line breaks where there shouldn't be, no spaces were there should be, paragraph headings look like regular paragraph text, and navigating between a picture being discussed and the text is horrendous, in large part due to lack of links. For some reason, this book is missing features to explain what page of the printed book corresponds to what you are reading, making school-assigned sections rather difficult.

As far as the context itself, it's pretty good. There are a number of things that could be clearer - I usually keep wikipedia in the background to quickly lookup key phrases. Incidentally, the authors know what phrases are important because they are all in bold, but not all of them are defined.

Here is a good example of all of the above problems. (Phrases between *asterisks* are bolded in the text; otherwise the following is formatted exactly how it appears):

The ANS is further subdivided into a *sympathetic division*
and a *parasympathetic division*
. A third division of ANS, the *enteric division*
, serves the alimentary canal.

Besides the problematic formatting, the book doesn't explain what sympathetic and parasympathetic are, despite putting both phrases in bold font to indicate their apparent importance in understanding histology.
