Medical and spiritual insights united in healing

Kenneth Bakken, clergyman and physician, in his book The Journey in to God seeks to revive the numinous, the holy, amongst Christian believers. As a deeply believing Lutheran Christian pastor he somewhat surprisingly states that publishing the Bible in common tongues so that the multitudes could read was not all gain. "Without the Holy Spirit, the gospel remains an idea--a message with no power to live by. With the Holy Spirit, however, it becomes a life-changing reality." Healing also requires the undergirding of caring friends who "should be nonjudgemental and self-accepting." Not simply concerned with prescribing pills he describes the healing power of laughter stimulating 'the brain to secrete endorphins and enkephalins, powerful chemical pain relievers, adrenaline and similar hormones are released, which stimulate the heart and lungs." While believing in God's unlimited power, at the same time he recognizes some patients may continue to suffer and die while being healed in the innermost being, the soul.

Confusion in Talladega

The book The Creeks of Talladega is an amateurish attempt to give bits and pieces of what the author knows about the Creek Indians in some areas of Alabama before Removal. THere is no logical sequencing of the material. Short articles about various incidents in Creek history are scattered about with no historical order or outline. Why the title of the book was chosen escapes this reader! Approximately six pages (out of 173 pages) were given to the Talladega area and little specific information concerning the Creek Indians in the area was given. Interested parties need not look to this material for any meaningful research on the Creeks in Alabama. Several historical mistakes are included (compare Menawa p. 51,49;a ficticious massacre at Burnt Corn Creek, p. 41; among others)

Not worth your time

I should have read the other review before ordering. A lot of the material is plagerized word for word from other sources and some of the "chapters" have whole paragraphs that are copied and pasted from previous "chapters". I place "chapters" in quotes because several are scarcly a page of text and most have nothing to do with the title of the "chapter".

All in all a poorly writen book that should have never been published. If you are looking for research material, look elsewhere.

It's tried twice by astronauts, one of whom lands on an airless asteroid and survives and the other dies instantly and terribly on a neutron star. So the American President orders 10 condemned prisoners to be offered a pardon if they 'volunteer' for and survive ten missions each using the sphere.

It's a good read. Well put together. Perhaps not quite as good as the author's second book 'Paradox'. About the right length, and with a slightly surprising ending.

Similar to Macaulay's Cathederal but for Adults

Like countless numbers of young people, I first became interested in the construction of cathedrals through David Macaulay's iconic children's book "Cathedral". His beautifully detailed illustrations brought medieval construction techniques to life. As an adult, I still love Macaulay's work but as a children's book, it can only carry you so far. Malcolm Hislop's "How to Buid a Cathedral" takes medieval construction to a much higher level. Hislop uses scores of richly detailed illustrations to explain the building technologies of the Middle Ages. In preparing this book, Hislop was able to draw upon beautifully detailed line drawings from Nineteenth Century sources. The other great virture of this book is that Hislop writes for the general public. This is a great book that is reasonably priced. Highly recommended!

This is the book I had been looking for since I saw it in a local book store, but unfortunately, did not purchase at the time. It gives very "in depth" descriptions of the design, layout and construction techniques at the time. The illustrations are fantastic in their detail and the description of the subject. I am amazed at how much detail was carved into the stone and can understand why it took generations to complete the construction. I highly recommend this book for anyone who who has an interest in the design and construction techniques of the period.

Thorough but full of mistakes

I have been studying Spanish for 7+ years and used this book as a text book in a college course that focused on the verb conjugations and tenses. We did about 90% of the exercises in the book. It's very thorough with the material that it covers, but the answers in the back are full of so many mistakes that the book almost isn't worth it. It was frustrating for us students to use the book and check our answers only to find mistakes. Eventually our professor stopped using the book.

Takes the torture out of grammar

I'm a Spanish tutor, and I find Gilda Nissenberg's Practice Makes Perfect: Complete Spanish Grammar the most user-friendly book of its type I've ever come across. The author has an uncanny ability to understand how an English speaker might get confused over Spanish grammatical structures, and explains very clearly how to avoid this `first language' influence and how to think in Spanish so that the structures, i.e., subjunctive, pronoun structure, conjunctions, clauses, make sense when one abandons what makes grammatical sense in English. The definitions and explanations are clear so that even grammatical terms that most native Spanish speakers would never use or need to learn become helpful in studying rather than confusing. There are lots of people that have reviewed this book to comment on its errors. Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world, after Mandarin and English, and given it's spoken in more countries than any other language, people will disagree on `correctness.'

This author does an excellent job covering nearly imaginable topic in Spanish from present tense verbs to double object pronouns. Indeed, this book is more than just a workbook. It is a comprehensive guide for students of every level learning how to speak Spanish. The student will appreciate the fact that the book teaches practical Spanish as it is spoken today, providing concise but thorough down-to-earth, easy-to-comprehend explanations that enable the learner to comprehend the most difficult areas of Spanish grammar.
This work book is filled with exercises in different formats for different learning styles. It also has thematic vocabulary panels for more natural learning. After this book, you should progress with Escribe y Repasa, which is much more challenging--providing more complex structures and readings in Spanish as well as dialects such as stories with gaucho slang, Catalan, among others.

Excellent review for someone with previous knowledge

Fantastic series!

What kind of learner am I?

I teach in a university-based adult education program, where many of my students are native Spanish speakers. My high school and college Spanish classes were a distant memory, but when I chose this book and its companions (pronouns and verbs), I DID remember enough to communicate at a basic level. I've found this series excellent for improving my Spanish enough for my students to comment enthusiastically after a relatively short time. I have no instructor, but I learn well from books, and I already knew how to pronounce Spanish words. For someone else in my position, I can't recommend this series highly enough--it's the best I found after extensive searching, library loans, etc.

Getting the most from this product:

I also recommend getting all three books (complete grammar, pronouns, and verbs) as I did. I've found that it's been helpful to work through a few sections in one book, switch to one of the others, and move ahead in similar jags through all three at once. I can tell when to switch by when I start to feel like I'm getting in over my head--I think it would be difficult to learn alone using just one of these.

Another tip: This series is pure grammar, but there's plenty of culture and literature available free online. I've supplemented the books by reading Spanish-language newspapers online (my favorite seems to be the BBC/Latin America), pasting the text into [...] to check my reading as needed. Often, I've translated these in their entirety for practice (the free translation's enough to understand, but not a particularly good translation). I also found a Spanish-speaking penpal by visiting Spanish chatrooms, and write back and forth frequently as a way to practice my written Spanish. These activities have provided the learning richness that simple grammar texts aren't intended to offer.

Who shouldn't use this?

However, if (for example) you know no (or almost no) Spanish now or remember very little vocabulary, this would be a poor choice. It definitely assumes some level of familiarity with the language.

Excellent

I was trained by the author John Fischer at the CIA. He is an excellent teacher of the FoH Art. It is truely an art to wait on people and give the guest every thing they could possibly want or need. John is a great and excellent teacher that dove into the realms of the ways and hows and whats to do and when to do it sequences. I got to see him in action behind a bar one afternoon serving up as the bartender that did not show that day. He was knowledgable about wines and bar drinks showing some razzle dazzle! He was "the man" when I had him. Thanks John and for even signing my book...guy

Move over remarkable service.

I attended the Culinary Institute of America and was trained by Mr. Fischer. I cannot imagine a single resource that does so much to demistify the key essentials of successful service than this reference. I recommend it to anyone in the industry or interested in the industry. The old standard (the bible until now) for front of the house reference has been remarkable service. An information filled text-book but a remarkably boring and mundane read. Entertaining, Original, Insightful, and Educational this is your one stop reading for front of the house.

I only bought this book for my Restaurant Management class homework. I was suprised to find out that there was no question and answers at the end of each chapters, like most of my text books for class. Overall the book was very informative. I especially liked that it did have a lot of photos. Some of my books are all text reading, borrrring.At Your Service: A Hands-On Guide to the Professional Dining Room
