Biblically Consistant and Intellectually Satisfying

Dr. Sailhamer is one of the world's foremost Hebrew Scholar's. His scholarship is only surpassed by his devotion to the Biblical text. Dr. Sailhamer is committed both to the authority and the inerrancy of the original manuscripts. His book is an honest, in depth, scholarly study of the Biblical texts of creation geared toward the layman. He views the creation account as a literal, historical account and the days of creation as literal 24 hour days. The essence of Dr. Sailhamer's book is that Genesis 1:1 describes the creation of the universe during an indeterminate amount of time; Genesis 1:2-2:4a describe the preparation of the land (the Garden of Eden/Promised Land) over six literal days. This is NOT a variation on the GAP Theory, nor is it an attempt to twist the Scriptures into compliance with contemporary views of science. It is the attempt of a brilliant and godly man to wrestle with the Scriptures in order to gain a better understanding of the meaning of the text. His interpretation is always based on the Hebrew text, its grammar, syntax and, most important of all, its context. Any honest scholar will admit that no interpretation of the Genesis account is entirely satisfying; all are to a greater or lesser degree problematic. Dr. Sailhamer's work comes closest to providing a satisfying solution, a solution that is consistent with the context of Genesis 1:1-2:4a, as will as the context of the entire book of Genesis, the Pentateuch and the whole of the Scriptures. If you would like a more in depth study of Genesis I would highly recommend Sailhamer's commentary on Genesis in the "Expositor's Bible Commentary" and his book "Pentateuch as Narrative". Sailhamer's works on Genesis and the Pentateuch have replaced Umberto Cassuto's writings as my most valued secondary sources for the study of the Pentateuch.

WELL WORTH READING

this is definitely one of the more memorable theological books i've read. i'm sure sailhamer has gotten some flack for his departure from the "orthodox". basically he suggests that Genesis 1 may be more a descrition of God's prepararion of the promised land rather than simply a literal (if not brief) synopsis of the creation of the universe. whether one believes, hates, or passively accepts the various assumptions of "evolution", one must at least wonder how we (as Christians) are to view scientific facts and theories that conflict with the biblical message (or at least our perceptions thereof). sailhamer's suggestion is not a new one. this can be found as well in earlier work by j lightfoote as well as some older rabbinic writings. anyway, this is a fast read and will be worth the time!

Close...but no banana...

The thesis is that *ha-eretz* in Genesis 1 refer to "the promised land," hence the days of creation refer to "palestine" not the the Cosmos. He cites several sages (most notably Rashi and Ibn Ezra) and 17th century biblical scholar John Lightfoot.
He cites a text in Jeremiah, which alludes to the earth becoming "void and without form" etc... This is a "proof text" for Sailhamer's thesis that "ha-eretz" is Israel, however the text refers to Israel and *surrounding* countries.
Personally I think it more likely that "ha eretz" in the mind of the author of Genesis is the fertile crescent, while the desert was (as it is) "void and without form" (tohu wa bohu). In bronze age Palestine, *this* probably *was* the "earth." As knowledge of Geography, interpreters kept making the text more "universalistic." (You see a similar development in Greek Mythology--in the Fifth century B.C. the "ends of the earth" was Sicily, in the First Century is was Spain.)
Nonetheless the book holds many interesting theological insights, especially with regard to the parallels with the tabernacle and it is a substantial contribution. Also recommended are his PENTATEUCH AS NARRATIVE and INTRODUCTION OF OLD TESTAMENT, which are more scholarly works.

I enjoyed this book from start to finish. Never heard of the author before but
They did a darn good job. I am glad that Smooth and China love was strong enough to survive. Love me some Ga Ga cause she kept it real. Couldn't stand Monica. Very good book.

Childhood Sweethearts

I really enjoyed the adventures of China and Smooth. They were both very young, but they handled things like mature adults. They had a weird relationship. One minute they were happy, then the next time they were bickering like brother and sister. Through all of their ups and downs, they realized they were made for each other. It just took awhile and other people to help them realize it.
Monica let her greed and jealousy become her downfall. And for that reason alone, she got what she deserved. Roxy was a sister every little girl should have. She was as loving as they came, and she didn't chose sides. Ga Ga just wanted what was best for her girls, and i applaud her for that. Miranda actually became a pretty cool person in spite of. Thank you Jasper Spears for a great story.

From teenage love to true love!!

I enjoyed this book so much. Smooth and China was what you call ride or die lovers. I knew Monica was a snake from the beginning because she was jealous of her friend. I liked Roxy to she was a little thug just like her sister. I know when things are going rough sometimes you hurt the one you love. Yes they both made mistakes but they stood by each other in the end. I hope their is a part two in the future.

In the second section of the book eighty Japanese woodblock prints selected from the Van der Velden Collection are illustrated. All of these are depicting tattooed characters. Not only does this selection reflect many highly fashionable aspects of urban life in nineteenth-century Japan, it also shows distinctly the gradually developed reciprocity between the phenomena of tattooing and printmaking in Japan. The third section of this publication is including illustrations of the date and censorship seals that are found on Japanese woodblock prints published between 1791 and 1876. Well over 800 (!) of such seals are brought together in an orderly survey that may serve as a guide to date Japanese prints.

About the Author
Suzanne Weixel is a self-employed writer and editor specializing in the technology industry. Her experience with computers began in 1974 when she learned to play football on the Dartmouth time-sharing terminal her brother installed in a spare bedroom. She graduated from Dartmouth College in 1981 with a degree in Art History. In 1984, after a series of jobs which included stints in the advertising department at Inc. Magazine, and as the Quality Assurance Coordinator at International Training Systems, a now-defunct developer of interactive educational training courseware, she wound up in the advertising department of ComputerWorld Newspaper. The following year she moved to the editorial department as the New Products Editor. In 1988, Suzanne left ComputerWorld to begin working full time as a freelance writer and editor. Since then, she has written, co-written, or edited more than 40 books, primarily for the technology education industry.

Faithe Wempen, M.A., CompTIA A+ (Noblesville, IN), has been teaching PC hardware and software architecture at Purdue University for over a decade. This workbook arrived in a very timely manner, was in better condition than advertised and seemed as if it were new, not used. As a computer software instructor I recommend this book to anyone that is just getting started with MS Word 2010. It is very easy to read and the files that accompany the book are great for the slow/beginning typist.

Pepper, attorney since 1988 for James Earl Ray, the convicted killer of Martin Luther King Jr., believes that his client was a patsy, not the real assassin. He charges that the civil rights leader slain in 1968 was the victim of a conspiracy that involved Hoover's FBI, the CIA, Army intelligence, the mafia and the Memphis, Tenn., police force, extending to the highest levels of the federal government, which viewed King as a dangerous revolutionary. Pepper has interviewed many new witnesses who remained silent during the last 27 years, and he names names of officials at the local and national levels who, he alleges, participated in the conspiracy. According to Pepper, a team of U.S. Army Special Forces snipers was at the scene, taking aim at King at the same moment as a back-up "civilian" assassin. The Army team, by this account, had orders to kill both King and the Reverend Andrew Young, but the final order to pull the trigger was never given because the "civilian" assassin-tentatively identified here as one Raul Pereira, not Ray-shot King first. Pepper interviewed two former Special Forces members who claim to have been part of the sniper squad. He also cites two failed, government-orchestrated attempts to assassinate King in 1965, as well as a subsequent mafia contract on the civil rights leader's life by New Orleans mob boss Carlos Marcello. Pepper wants a trial for Ray, who, he asserts, was coerced into pleading guilty by his lawyer; the defense, he notes, has never even been allowed to test the rifle or bullets in evidence.

Since 1988, Pepper, who was active in the civil rights and antiwar movements in the 1960s, has been chief counsel for James Earl Ray, convicted--on a guilty plea, without a trial--of the April 4, 1968, assassination of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King. Through appeals, a civil suit, a TV simulation of the trial Ray never had, and now this book, Pepper has tried to bring to judicial and public attention new evidence, which suggests strongly that Ray was merely the fall guy in a multilevel assassination plot involving the Mafia and government intelligence agencies. Perhaps as disturbing as the paranoia of the FBI, Army Intelligence, and other agencies that viewed Dr. King as a dangerous revolutionary leader are the subsequent actions of local, state, and federal officials who continue, even today, to obscure and obfuscate what happened in 1968. This stunning book deftly reveals the horrible truth.

As someone who reads widely and often, I can honestly say this: Very few books I have ever read have had as profound an impact upon me as Dr. William Pepper's meticulously and exhaustively researched "Orders To Kill". Dr. Pepper spent upwards of 18 years researching the facts behind the King Assassination and is probably the world's leading authority on the subject. "Orders To Kill" contains the results of those 18 years of investigation.
What he found is chilling and disturbing, and should make us wonder what happened to our "democracy": The government of the United States, among others, was deeply involved in the killing. And in a testament to Dr. Pepper's tenacity and skill as an investigative journalist, many of those responsible for King's political murder have actually admitted their complicity in the book (These facts do not 'give away' the plot, since this information is contained on the outside back of the book and because it takes a book of over 500 pages like this one to fully explain the enormity of the event it describes).
In fact, one of the men implicated in the assassination, witnessed the shooting himself and names the individual who actually fired the bullet that killed Dr. King (Hint: it is not James Earl Ray). Of course, this individual named names only after being assured by Dr. Pepper that he would be immune from prosecution for his role in the killing.
Dr. Pepper, through sheer persistence, an iron will, and a burning desire for the truth, has written a book that will grab the reader from page one, and not let go until the bitter (very) end.
The tale it so skillfully tells is a tragic one and is of epic proportions. But it is a tale that must be told, for if truth is to prevail in this world, as I believe it must, then books like this one must be written. I cannot recommend a book more highly than I recommend this one. Read it and prepare to be disgusted, frightened, saddened, and in the end, amazed and hopefully glad that the truth has finally prevailed.

What the King family wants you to know about his death

This very informative book starts with an introduction by Dexter King, son to Martin Luther King Jr. supporting author/attorney Wiliam Pepper's contention that this book tells the story of why his father died.

In his typically detailed fashion (also on display in Pepper's more recent Act of State) Pepper extensively supports his theories that:

1) James Earl Ray did NOT kill Martin Luther King Jr.

2) That the killing was rather the culmination of a conspiracy by the CIA, the FBI, organized crime, local Memphis law enforcement and others to eliminate King as a potential rival political leader to then President Lyndon Johnson, and

3) That the data supporting these claims includes the following:

a) A failure on the part of ballistics testing to match the gun possessed by Ray as being the actual murder weapon. Subsequent ballistics testing showed that this weapon had a unique charactistic where it would super heat and thereby cause melting to the bullets in a way which frustrate traditional matching attempts.

b) Claims by Ray himself that he was not guilty and that he was an innocent patsy brought to Memphis at the discretion of one Raul (Ray's sort of "one armed man") whok had been in contact with Ray for about a year prior to the killing. It's Rays contention that Raul would periodically give Ray assignments and then pay him in cash for performing those assignments including ultimately the purchase of the weapon police said was used by him to kill King.

c) Evidence that Raul did indeed exist and was linked to corrupt law enforcement in New Orleans.

d) Evidence provided by one Lloyd Jowers the owner of Jim's Grille, a dubious eating establishment located proximate to the Lorraine Motel where King was standing when he was shot. Jowers told Pepper that he had been involved in the plot to kill King and even later named a Memphis police officer, one Earl Clark as being the actual triggerman.

Unlike other conspiracy theories this one has the added currency of being the basis of not but two court victories on the part of its proponent. The first of these victories was a television trial wherein James Earl Ray was acquitted, albeit only on TV but still against a reputable prosecutor and featuring actual evidence from the original case itself. The other in court victory was a civil suit by the King estate against Lloyd Jowers seeking nominal damages (100 payable by Jowers to the King family for funeral expenses) and also a finding by the court that Jowers was indeed part of a larger conspiracy.

What's more other evidence has more than amply corroborated long term surveillance by the FBI throughout the 60s including many dirty tricks played by that selfsame organization.

From my perspective, one of the many ways in which those claiming a respect for the King legacy can show a true respect for that legacy is at least understanding his family's take on why he really died.

Six Stars, But Buy Pepper's Latest Book, The Plot to Kill King

I bought the Kindle edition of Orders to Kill three days ago, thinking I would read it during a flight next week from Chennai to New York, but once I started reading it I couldn't stop. I finished it today and discovered that Dr. Pepper's latest book, The Plot to Kill King: The Truth Behind the Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., became available yesterday. Orders to Kill is an enormously informative and important book. I'd give it six stars if I could. Some reviewers say that Pepper shows that Dr. King was assassinated by rogue government actors. I don't agree. I think Pepper shows that the military arranged to kill Dr. King in Memphis, but the mafia beat them to it by a matter of seconds.
Looks like I'll have to buy The Plot to Kill King for my flght.

Lani Lynn Vale never disappoints!

I have to admit that before this book, specifically during Apple's book I did not care much for Ridley, he was just an ass in my opinion... after reading Dirty Mother I find Ridley to be one of my favorite guys. He loves hard and although it took him a while to figure out his inner turmoil he always had Freya's best interests in mind. There were times I yelled at him to get his s@$t together, but there was no denying his feelings
Freya was this timid sad girl who came off as a pushover, but throughout the book you find yourself in awe of what a real bad ass she is! She may be scared to speak her mind but she proves she will do what she has to in order to keep her man alive! I love this couple hard!

Dirty and sweet

This is a great mix of dark and light. Freya is in a dark place. She has nothing to hold onto at this point in her life. And blow after blow keeps coming her way. In her darkest moments comes a ray of light by the name of Ridley. Ridley has his own demons to fight. Although he feels somewhat responsible for her brothers death he is too consumed with catching those responsible for the death of his wife to give Freya everything. Although this book deals with a heavier subject LLV still manages to bring us a book filled with love, understanding, respect and humor. I must also state that I love the two leading characters. Freya although meek she has no problem telling Ridley where to stick it. And Ridley doesn't play games and is brutality honest. Can't wait for the next one.

They may be members of the Uncertain Saints MC, but there is definitely no uncertainty about where the hearts of these men belong. This is the fifth installment in Lani Lynn Vale's MC series and once again she has kept my interest throughout the entire story. I'm really enjoying this series and I am looking forward to finally reading Wolfe's story in the final installment. But first, Dirty Mother. This was Ridley Walker and Freya Capone's story.

Ridley has taken a step back from relationships and women, due to the loss of his wife and child five years previous, under violent circumstances. His life has just become routine, until he meets Freya, the sister of one of his friends. He has such a huge instant attraction to Freya that he simply cannot get her out of his mind. Freya, is a woman with a gentle soul, who has been constantly bullied and put down by others throughout her entire life. Her chance meeting with Ridley and the death of her brother, brings out a strength that Freya has never shown before.

In the background there is a parallel story running, which involves the death of Ridley's wife. This part of the storyline is intriguing and confusing. Even though Ridley has mourned his wife for this entire time, he fails to tell Freya about her. The intriguing part comes, as Ridly must go undercover to help capture the man who killed his wife and child. How will this affect his growing relationship with Freya? Can he overcome the past to move on with his future?

All in all I enjoyed this story. Every now and then though, I did get a little confused with parts of the storyline as they didn't seem to match up with what Ms Vale had written in her previous novels in this series. But, it didn't really take away from what she portrayed in this one.

About the Author

Allan Metcalf is author of six previous books on language, most recently OK: The Improbable Story of America's Greatest Word (Oxford University Press, 2010). He posts weekly to the Lingua Franca blog of the Chronicle of Higher Education, and, as executive secretary of the American Dialect Society, invented that group's annual vote on Word of the Year. He is Professor of English at MacMurray College and consultant to attorneys on matters of language and law.

Words that characterize generations. His generations are odd and the word selection subjective but interesting. A fast read.

Metcalf has a great topic here, but could carry it out better. He divides American history into generations, backfilling from the recent Gen X and all that. These seem somewhat forced. The Republican generation 1742-66; Compromise generation 1767-91; Transcendental generation 1792-1821; Gilded 1822-42; Progressive 1843-59; Missionary 1860-82; Lost generation 1883-1900; and so on. These are the years people were born and grew up and used words he lists. His selection is quite arbitrary, but interesting and should please anyone interested in words and jargon.

Most of his selections lasted a few years to a few decades but some remain. Okay, for example, remains nearly as common as "like." Some words change. Pioneer, foe example, originally had a military meaning, something like advance guard. The deadline comes from a line drawn in the sand which, if prisoners crossed at Andersonville they were shot--this one is contestable. Dude goes back to 1883 meaning a foppish young man.

This is not a particularly serious book, it's light reading. Buy another book if it's Christmas and you've got a serious etymologist in the family.

A Book for Word Lovers and Knowledge Junkies Alike

I received a NetGalley copy in exchange for an honest review.
I have a love of words. Once when I was younger I tried to start a collection of words by writing new ones down in a notebook.
It didn't work. It bored me and I gave up.
However, all this is to say that I have a great interest in words of all sorts, and I also have a great interest in learning things that I don't need to know, but give me facts that I can later tell to all of my friends.
Needless to say, when i was scrolling through NetGalley and saw this book, I was pretty excited to read it.
'From Skedaddle to Selfie' is a book on the history of words. The author has taken many words that are common nowadays and done quite a bit of research into their backgrounds, including where they came from, their first mentions, and how the word has changed over the generations. We also learn some of the events surrounding the birth of the word and how they affected its meaning, and how later events caused the word's meaning to slowly warp.
Some words that I had found the background particularly interesting were G.I. Joe, the negative connotation of which has rather disappeared, O.K., a word whose 'birth' I had never before thought about, and we also get to read about the reaction to the new word, 'sexy' in the 20s (they were horrified).
The book was very entertaining, and I now have a lot of interesting facts to share with people that I know. I recommend this book to word lovers and knowledge junkies alike. If you're both of those, so much the better.

Enjoyable read with interesting organization

I was expecting a fairly basic collection of words from different generations which helped to define those generations. This book provided so much more than that. As explained in the beginning, the structure of the generations is based on research by Strauss and Howe on generational cycles and the types of generations that have historically preceded and followed each other.

By use of this general guideline, Metcalf presents a collection of words with not simply a bit of history about each word but also how the words happen to coincide with the type of generation as described by Strauss and Howe.

This will be an interesting read for lovers of words and for history buffs who like to read about the ways in which language and culture are intertwined. Highly recommended!

A lot of information but presented in a very uninteresting manner

It is a book that discusses a lot of things about the human body. I read the part about the nervous system more extensively, since I was preparing for a lecture on the significant areas of the brains and CNS. It gives a significant amount of information but unfortunately it fails (miserably) to give the importance and significance of all the information being given. If a student were to read the book, I am sure these information will not be remembered. Another thing, the manner on how the book was written leaves a lot to be desired. The topics were not presented in an interesting way so a student trying to go through the text will definitely need to find a way to harness his concentration and desire to learn to finish his assigned reading.

A fine text for medical school

A fine text for medical school. However it has way too much detail for a primary text source. Good for referencing topics that need more flushing out. I would recommend this as a supplement to Costanzo's Physiology, but ONLY if you find that Costanzo is missing details you want.

don't get it digital

I got the Kindle version for my smart phone and several figures are missing. Not to mention there is little to go off of for when a figure or side bar comment is progressing and when it has switch back to the main text. I do like the search feature.
