About the Author
Julian Spalding was director of art galleries for the cities of Sheffield, Manchester and Glasgow. He established the award winning Ruskin Gallery, the Gallery of Modern Art (Glasgow), the St Mungo Museum of Religious Art and Life, the Open Museum and the Campaign for Drawing. His books include: The Poetic Museum - reviving historic collections: The Eclipse of Art - tackling the crisis in art today; The Art of Wonder, a history of seeing (which won the Bannister Fletcher Prize as the best art book of 2006) and The Best Art You've Never Seen - 101 hidden treasures from around the world (a Rough Guide). who or what is the con ???

I bought this book wanting to gain an insight to current arts practice. I'm unclear as to how any one can take this writing by Julian Spalding seriously. It is fair enough to have an opinion, but opinions need to be backed up, supported & thought through. Throughout the book Spalding makes references to artists & their work, but doesn't include any detail or any context to the work. The writing appears more like a name dropping dinner party guest who actually has never met or been in the same room as the person. Putting David Hockney on par with Michelangelo is a reflection of the depth (or indeed, the lack) of analysis and critical thinking this book revels in.

To anyone seriously wanting to investigate contemporary art, its artists, art & the world surrounding it, this book offers nothing other than the what appears to be a very personal attack.

Alas, it was released on April 1st, so maybe this conceptual provocation is really a work of art in itself...

Good opinion but without background or context

This is a short but nicely-written presentation of the author's opinions. He is critical of much modern art and of the modern art market. I happen to agree with him. The problem is that his book requires, rather than provides, an understanding of art or the market. For that I recommend Don Thompson's The Twelve Million Dollar Stuffed Shark. Reading that book, though, makes Spalding's superfluous unless you want to read confirmation of Thompson's opinions from an art expert (Thompson is an economist).

Opinionated and enjoyable; maybe to the point too

Conceptual art is not all rubbish. But much of it is a put on job. Spalding is right on. And describes the system that supports it with brutal honesty. Shit in a can at the Tate? Then again, if a collection needs to reflect the times so be it. The poor conservation expert though . . .

About the Author
Lawrence Wright graduated from Tulane University and spent two years teaching at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. The author of five works of nonfiction, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Looming Tower, he has also written a novel, God's Favorite, and was cowriter of the movie The Siege. He and his wife are longtime residents of Austin, Texas.

Well written personal tour through some heady decades

This book hooked me start to end, and stuck with me afterwards. I was born in the early 1960s but I suspect someone born in the 40s or 50s would be even more affected by it. Great read - and I learned some interesting things too.

Glad its Back

For nearly 20 years I've used this book in the college classroom and for nearly 20 years it has been out of print. I've had to rely on tattered and marked-up used copies. But the students loved it, and I persisted. This is a superb book that captures the times, the hope and the angst.

Coming of Age Memoir for Baby Boomers

'In the New World' is an excellent hybrid of memoir and political/social history. The reader watches as Wright transforms from a young, conservative Evangelical Christian, into a left wing anti-war protester, and then into a Jimmy Carter-infatuated family man who has more in common with his father than he would have probably imagined. A great read.

DALE DAUTEN

As founder of The Innovators’ Lab�, an organization devoted to developing and testing new ideas in management and marketing, Dale has done idea generation with dozens of organizations, including Honeywell, General Dynamics, Caterpillar, and NASA.

His consulting work includes educational programs for Certified Innovation Mentors, and his work on creating a culture of innovation yielded a patent-pending new advance on brainstorming called BrainTouring™.

Dale has been researching achievers since his student days at Arizona State and Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. As a manager, are you getting the best performance from your employees? That's the challenge from Dauten and O'Donnell in Mandatory Greatness, a book that's well worth reading by seasoned leaders as well as new managers. The conversational format makes it a fun fast read--very accessible to busy professionals. People will easily relate the stories to their own experience. And the debate between the characters keeps it controversial enough to pull the reader along to the final chapter!

This is more than a book; it's a parable!

I really enjoyed and benefitted from Mandatory Greatness.

Wikipedia defines a parable as follows:

A parable is [1] a succinct story, in prose or verse, which illustrates one or more instructive principles, or lessons, or (sometimes) a normative principle.

Normative is further defined as:

Normative has specialized contextual meanings in several academic disciplines. Generically, it means relating to an ideal standard or model.[1] In practice, it has strong connotations of relating to a typical standard or model (see also normality).

Mandatory Greatness is more than a business book or a story. In my opinion, it's a parable. I've read many business books in my life and most will facilitate success if the reader applies the wisdom shared and the knowledge gained. Unfortunately, too many reading experiences end up on the bottom shelf and not on the bottom line.

J. T. and Dale offer a fun and simultaneously very practical insight into the reality of business and life. The book is an easy and entertaining read. The 12 steps (The 12 Law of Driving Exceptional Performance) provide a one page "To Do" list on leadership and management. I believe these should be a standard.

The simple description of "management types" (The Smart Ass, The Kiss Ass, The Hard Ass), caught my eye and when I pondered what I read, faces from my past appeared on the page. (See what I mean? You haven't read the book yet I bet you've personalized these descriptions.)

I've already added one bit of wisdom from this book to a presentation I'm making to the HOBY leadership program on Saturday night. To me it makes understandable the challenges facing business as we try to assimilate tomorrow (Gen Y) into today.

Judge for yourself:

"However, you don't become special by doing ordinary things and having everyone tell you how terrific you are. All parents applaud when the toddler uses the potty, calling in the other parent to look at the little poop. But if you're still applauding when the kid is 25, something is wrong. And not with the kid."

Parents, managers and leaders need to rethink their roles and expectations. They need to get real. This book helps with that process.

Great examination of leadership

This was a very enjoyable and thought provoking read. The breezy format sucks you in, but Dauten and O'Donnell hide pearls of wisdom around many corners. The 12 laws range from eye opening in some cases to subtle codifications of what you may already know. I certainly believe that there is something in this book to be learned or affirmed by professionals at every career level - if you're just starting out, it's a blueprint for success and a lot to consider as you move forward; if you're a "seasoned" professional managing a team (the target of the book, really), the discussion forces a reexamination of many elements of personnel oversight. Really good stuff.

JOSEPH D. TOUCH is Director of the Postel Center for Experimental Networking in the Computer Networks Division of Information Sciences Institute and Research Assistant Professor at USC. He was co-chair of the International Workshop on Protocols for High-Speed Networks.

Reasonable attempt to extract principles

This book provides a refreshing change from most networking books that describe a mass of protocols, and instead attempts to extract principles that underly these protocols. These are summarized in an appendix, and are discussed throughout the book.
The downside is that one section of the book will often (of necessity) refer to principles described in another section of the book, but the only reference is to a name and number of the principle (e.g. "Backward Compatibilty Inhibits Radical Change (III.7)"). To find more detail about the principle requires searching the appendix (section III.7 for the example) that is somewhere towards the end of the book for a page reference where the principle is defined. It would be better if the inside cover listed the titles of the principles and the pages where they are defined, and if the appendix or index could list the pages where the principle is used.

A Book that needs to be on any System/Network Designer's shelf

This is one of those books that would definitely benefit anyone trying to design a protocol/system for high performance. It has a great deal of information and trade-offs that one should consider while designing a system. Chapter 2 alone is a lot of information and design methodologies that are widely deploy-able across any platform that anyone would work on. I have been working on this book for a while now and feel that this is a ready reference when I would be designing my own protocol (if luck so falls upon me!) and make all the points a check-list to be sure that what I have designed is in keeping with the principles outlined in this work.. Even though the book seems to be old in print, the information is not tied to any particular technology which makes it still relevant in this day and age. Highly recommend this book and hope it gets its due in readership.

Comprehensive coverage to High-speed networking concepts

If you already know basics of networking and you in developing a product or involved in protocol design or trying to architect a BOX this book is for you.
The book has taken a different approach by explaning concepts and providing key difference which you will not find in RFC's are specifications.
The book does not talk about any protocol detail rather it provides a concepts and problems behind the protocol and is really a nice thing to read and covers from physical layer, network components, host and end-to-end issues.
I gave this 5 star - useful references , tips and quotes to remember the principles are really good. Thank God! not much of mathematics while explaining some concepts.

I don't know the German book, Hannah got a English book.

I hate when Jeff Kinney write in German Edition! I give up, I HATE it!!

Man, I thought on everybody's mind.

The reason is, I have to be busy right now, so, don't tell me you're not good at me.

I haven't read the other two books after this one, but I hope they're not all full with other people's jokes as well.
