Excellent and accessible guide to Romans 1-7

Romans: it’s one of the most intimidating, confusing, and powerful books in the entirety of Scripture. In its 16 chapters, the apostle Paul casts a sweeping vision God’s redemptive purposes—”how God in the gospel makes sinners righteous, but also how this most precious gift of God is enjoyed in our lives,” writes Tim Keller in Romans 1-7 For You, “how it produces deep and massive changes in our behavior and even in our character.”

In his typical irenic fashion, Keller unpacks the message of the first seven chapters of Romans, helping us see the beauty of the gospel and our desperate need for it.

One of the most challenging issues we face reading Romans—and indeed, all of Scripture—is Paul’s emphatic decree that all of humanity is lost in when confronted by the justice of God.

That we are all, “without excuse,” with no hope to be found in moralism or pleas of ignorance. “For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Paul wrote in Romans 3:22-23Open in Logos Bible Software (if available). But he doesn’t leave us without hope. For while all have sinned and continually fall short of the glory of God, all who are saved “are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 3:24Open in Logos Bible Software (if available)). Moralism doesn’t justify, nor does ignorance. Instead, it is only God’s grace, the gift of redemption found in Jesus. And this is such good news for all of us:

God does not set his justice aside; he turns it onto himself. The cross does not represent a compromise between God’s wrath and his love; it does not satisfy each halfway. Rather, it satisfies each fully and in the very same action. On the cross, the wrath and love of God were both vindicated, both demonstrated, and both expressed perfectly. They both shine out, and are utterly fulfilled. The cross is a demonstration both of God’s justice, and of his justifying love (Romans 3:25-26Open in Logos Bible Software (if available)).

Although all of Keller’s examination of Romans 1-7 is sound and edifying, perhaps no portion was more helpful to me personally than reading his view of the “wretched man” of Romans 7:7-25Open in Logos Bible Software (if available). Paul’s exposition of the effects of sin, the desire to do what is right, but being confounded by sin, has left many scratching their heads. Was he talking about Paul the unbeliever or Paul the believer?

Keller believes—and I would be inclined to agree—that Paul was writing of his then-present experience as a Christian, and the conflicting desires we all wrestle with. He writes:

"We have, in some sense, “multiple selves.” Sometimes we want to be this; sometimes we want to be that. Morally, most people feel “torn” between diverse selves as well. Freud went so far as to talk about an inner “libido” (filled with primal desires) and a “superego” (the conscience filled with social and familial standards). The great question we all face is: I have divergent desires, different “selves.” Which is my true self? What do I most want?"

This is helpful for so many reasons (and not simply because of confirmation bias). The point of Paul’s writing about these truths, that he continued to struggle with sin—and if anything, as he grew older, became increasingly aware of his own sinfulness—is to push us toward deeper dependence upon the Lord Jesus.

We are not justified and then left to our own devices to grow in holiness. If, to borrow an analogy, the gospel merely reset our righteousness back to zero, instead of giving us Christ’s, we’d still be damned. We do not do the things we want to do, and we do the things we don’t want to do. Paul’s point is simple, Keller says: “The unbeliever cannot keep the law (v 7-13); but neither can the believer!”

"When we read God’s law properly, and when we look at our own lives honestly, we can only conclude that we are “wretched.” Without accepting this, we will never grasp the glory of the gospel. We will never truly appreciate the gospel of received righteousness. Only if our hearts truly cry at our wretchedness can we then know the hope and liberation of looking away from ourselves and to what God has done. Who will rescue Paul, and us? “Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (v 25)."

Like the other volumes in the For You series, Romans 1-7 For You is not an exhaustive study of Paul’s epistle, nor is it intended to be. As I described the recently released Judges For You, this is a devotional commentary. Use it like one.

Allow Keller’s insights in Romans 1-7 For You to inform your study. Glean helpful insights and illustrations to use in sermons or small group studies. But even as you do, read it with the good of your soul in mind, recognizing afresh all Christ has done on your behalf, and grasping anew the glory of the gospel in Romans.

The Gospel: Clear, Concise, Uncompromising

Is it possible to overstate the importance and significance of Paul’s Epistle to the Romans? I don’t believe so. Not that one book in sacred Scripture is ‘more’ inspired than any other, but there is something about Romans that sets it apart as the pinnacle of Paul’s writings. Maybe it is Paul’s logical progression or his clear presentation of the Gospel as the universal prescription for what ails us or his soul-piercing precision; and quite frankly, it is probably all of the above, but Romans is different-both in content and in impact.

With that said, are new and seasoned Christians alike, afraid to taste the waters? Do we put Romans 8:28 on a refrigerator magnate while willfully turning a blind-eye to chapters 9-11? Is Paul’s example of homosexuality as an example of our lust-gone-wild too radical for society’s current whims of “if it works for you…”? With certainty, Romans is polarizing. It is a game-changer. And for my money it should be read, studied, analyzed, understood, and applied.

And that is exactly what pastor and teacher Tim Keller has provided for all that would come to this fountain. His book, Romans (1-7) For You, is a fantastic resource of a seasoned Christian attempting to walk with the reader through one of the most significant additions to sacred Scripture. Like Phillip accompanying the Ethiopian eunuch, who was lost in the confusion of Isaiah, Pastor Keller sits down with the reader and in a very palatable way, offering his insight and explanation. It is not a commentary on Romans, it is not even a devotional on Romans, it is in fact a pastoral guide through a very important section of Scripture so that the reader can be both enlightened and compelled to heed the Gospel’s call.

This book is best suited for those fascinated by the Epistle to the Romans but may feel too intimidated by any number of factors. Pastor Keller does a great job of bringing Romans to the reader without compromising the integrity of the message. This book could serve as a tremendous resource for small groups and the like simply by taking advantage of the chapter size and the discussion questions at the end of each break.

As one would expect from Pastor Keller-this work is well-researched, the format is very easy to use, and his explanation of the text is accurate and digestible. Here is a quote from pg 46 tackling the apparent conflict between works and faith: “...the apples on an apple tree prove life, but they don’t provide it. The apples are the evidence that the apple tree is alive, but the roots are what pull in the nourishment to keep it that way. In the same way, faith in Christ alone provides new life (he gives his righteousness, the righteousness of God, to anyone who believes); but a changed life of righteousness is what proves we have real faith.” And there is more where that came from.

Excellent resource on Romans

The Book of Romans has a long and storied tradition in the history of the Church. Augustine read Romans and was pierced to the heart and sounded saved. Luther, Calvin and many others have read Romans with great profit to their lives in Christ and ministries for Christ. Well-known Pastor Tim Keller has written a very helpful commentary Romans For You that covers chapters 1-7 of the book of Romans. This book on Romans combines Keller’s extensive biblical knowledge with cultural and practical insights into God’s Word.

One of the more outstanding features of this book is after he walks his readers through the passage; he then explains the theological importance for each particular section of Scripture. This is a feature even among pastoral commentaries that is rare and greatly appreciated to this reviewer. One of the main concerns that many people have with commentaries is that they are dry and boring. While technical commentaries major on every point of the passage including the various views—Keller does that but with a view to help guide the lay reader of the Word of God into a deeper understanding of what the text of Scriptures say. In addition to this helpful feature—Keller also seeks to show the importance of Romans to everyday life.

The Book of Romans has a long and proud tradition in the history of the Church; especially in the Reformed world. As I read this commentary I was encouraged by the explanation of Romans 1-3 with its emphasis on the sinfulness of man. Keller’s work on Romans 4-5 rightly helps the reader understand justification and his work on Romans 6-7 helps the reader understand definitive sanctification and the law. While there are possibly some points at which some Christians will disagree with Keller on; all in all Romans 1-7 For You is a helpful exploration into arguably one of the most important books of the Bible in Romans.

Whether you are a new Christian or a seasoned student of Romans, Romans 1-7 For You will help you learn what Romans teaches and the importance of its message to your daily life. I highly recommend this resource on Romans and pray the Lord uses it to help lay readers understand Romans 1-7.

Excellent Interior Design Student Staple

Easy to read and understand, lots of illustrations of standard sizes and spacing, even has floor plans and illustrations of important works by Mies Van der Rohe, Josef Hoffmann, Inigo Jones, etc. Informal, sketchy, large illustrations and work-book assignments feel a little childish, but it makes it less intimidating for such a comprehensive text.

Lots of Commercial Design emphasis

This book was a requirement for my Interior Design course. The concepts were clearly explained and there are multiple drawings. The only thing our class and instructor noted was there is heavy emphasis on commercial spaces design, light on residential design. A lot of the exercises involved retails stores and restaurants.

Ivor Myers is truly one whom God uses to make His Word plain and easy to understand! He has put a lot of research and thought into this book. He presents both sides of the Christian right and the liberal left, and does it in a sincere and compassionate way. In his introduction, Ivor promises this: "...should you decide to read this book: I will not write condescendingly or sarcastically. I will not present arguments from 'my personal experiences', which makes such an argument subjective at best. I will not use circular reasoning, which means that I will not substantiate the claims inside the Bible with evidence strictly from inside the Bible." This is a must read book, you will learn a lot from it and you won’t regret purchasing it, it is well worth the price!

To anyone that recognizes a storm brewing in politics, religion, society environment, climate change, healthcare and the list could go on, then I think it is key to recognize from history what the future holds. How fascinating to consider the idea that perhaps Christianity is responsible for the rapid rise in atheism and that history is repeating. This book has really helped me see clearly the need to not be so easily swayed by apparent realities in the world today. I am passionate about trends and believe this book is a must read for anyone seeking to make better business decisions, career decisions and life decisions.

An easy read but a challenging book.

Unusually sophisticated approach. The skeptic turned Christian author stays in his lane, resisting the urge that many writers of the cloth fall prey to; using science to defend religion. After setting an extremely fair and data driven tone in the first half of the book, the author appeals to logic and history to assert that maybe, just maybe, the Bible has earned an open minded evaluation from the eye of every skeptic.

An easy read but a challenging book. I highly recommend this respectful, thoughtful, fair and unique approach to this thousand year old question; "Does God exist?"

A "rollicking" fun read

The fact that this series is called "Rollicking Regency" has to be a sign of good things to come. Who doesn't love a good old fashioned regency romance? All the Tea in China is a good start to such a series. Great characters, mystery, intrigue, adventure, a bit of piracy, and of course some romance.

The first paragraph provides a good tasting of the adventure that is to come. "I can abide neither a liar nor a cheat but you may be wont to think me such while I here relate my little tale. Were I not your humble narrator, even now I would scarce believe it anything but mere fiction. I take pen to resolute hand to assure you that what I am about recount is truth, not the least of which involves heartbreak, joy, a Chinese translation of the Gospel according to St. Luke, and, oh yes, a rather large sword." The overall imagery of the story is wonderful- you feel as if you are on the ship sailing with Isabelle from London to Cape Town to China.

The interplay between Phineas and Isabelle is fun to watch. At their first meeting, Phineas comes upon Isabelle examining herself (a smudge on her dress) in a mirror. Being a typical, frustrating sort of male he says "unless your vision is poor, you will not find your image improved by pressing against a mirror. Though I'll not gainsay that many ladies oft believe it otherwise." lol- You can just see the trouble that is in the offing (and the steam coming out of Izzy's ears...)

Overall a great story that I look forward to reading more in the series. My only complaint is that the plot was a bit too predictable and the ending felt rushed. Other than that a wonderful read!

Rollicking fun shifts gears halfway

While quite enjoyable and well written, I found this book to be significantly less "Rollicking" than advertised. This certainly isn't a bad thing, but it is a little unfair to those who (like me) picked it up thinking it would be the ultimate in silly escapist fiction.

Initially, Orcutt presents a heroine whose ambition is to fulfill God's calling, which she believes will bring her adventure, excitement, and a chance to make a difference. She's got all the makings of a slightly over the top - but still good-hearted - romantic heroine, and I instantly fell in love with both her and her narrative voice. But partway through the story shifts focus. What starts out as a swashbuckling tale of high seas and exotic places shifts into a character-driven story about growth and the challenges of cultural clash and differences in morality. Both halves are exceedingly well done, but if you signed up for some pure rollicking fun... Well, this book will not satisfy a craving for an "and then they sailed off into the sunset towards their next great adventure, capes billowing in the wind and swords at the ready" type ending.

Instead it switches gears and the characters mature, asking us to find God's calling in slightly less epic things. It's very well done in this way. It's thoughtful, challenging, and puts characters in several tough situations where they have to remain Christian as they sort through the morally grey. In that way this novel is interesting and challenging.

But it's also a little less crazy, over-the top fun. Which is fine - I still enjoyed it - but it isn't exactly as advertised in my opinion.

Publicly slighted by her so called friends in English society in Oxford, Isabella Goodrich is so humiliated that stowing away with the livestock on a ship bound for China, is a preferred option!

Phineas Snowe, the mysterious missionary Isabella hopes to join evangelising the lost, is horrified when Isabella is found, delirious, weakened and in a very odorous state. He devises a plan to protect Isabella with every intention of hoisting her off the ship at the next port. Isabella's journey is filled with intrigue, swordplay, danger and language lessons but can she prove to Phineas that God's plan for her lies in the beauty of the Orient?

Jane Orcutt's final novel, published posthumously, is delightful and its description as a Rollicking Regency is perfect. Isabella is an endearing character, well educated yet naive, adept in swordplay but not in social scheming, funny and devoted. Jane has cleverly drawn Phineas, flawed and unappealing yet as his desire to serve the people of China and God is revealed, the reader is drawn to his passionate and caring heart. The dialogue is snappy and fun, the scenery and culture beautifully described and the message of love and forgiveness is gentle and reassuring. All The Tea in China will not disappoint but if you need a further reason to buy this wonderful book, all proceeds will be assisting Jane's husband and sons as they come to terms with the loss of Jane, a loving wife and mother and one very talented author.
